It surprises me too how bad ELP ratings are compared to the other prog giants like Genesis, Yes, Floyd, Jethro, etc....

I shook my head and smiled a whisper knowing all about the place

That's, probably, because they are much less of giants. For one thing, ELP - even at the peak of their glory - were never quite a match for the intellectual breadth and diversity of KC, Yes, Tull or PF.
Their contribution to the musical heritage of the 70's is visible, but I can't recall them changing the history of rock music in a permanent way. Then, if we look upon the meanings of the word "progressive" as a guidance, you'd expect a prog musician to evolve. For better or worse, KC, PF and Yes kept re-inventing themselves for decades after their debut in the 60's. ELP didn't. They had completely fizzled out by 1977 or thereabouts, I think.

'Reinventing themselves' as either going commercial or adopting a self conscious minimal style to appease the punk loving music journos I guess.
ELP were just three guys but they were as important in that 1970 -1973 period as any as far as rock music or prog rock was concerned. Its a shame though they are treated with so little respect and so much contempt in general. But hey ho thats life n all that. They weren't perfect but they were influential and still discussed to death!

I assume the reason their ratings aren't as high is because their albums were usually considered rather inconsistent and patchy. Unlike other prog groups, they didn't really have a 'unified vision'. They were just three guys trying to find common ground and often going in different directions. And apparently few people appreciate all of these directions.

Ok so Karn evil 9. Not bad. It will take a little more time to grow on me. I will say that the keyboardist, Emerson is freakin incredible. I like his playing the most in the song and that is what stands out for me right now. ;). Doesn't quite blow my head off yet because I'm really into a completely different sound right now, but it'll get there. :)

I wasn't expecting it to blow your head off. It's part of the lyric:
Come inside, the show's about to start Guaranteed to blow your head apart Rest assured you'll get your money's worth The greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth. You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo. You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll ....

Exactly what I think. They have many songs that are among my favourite prog songs, but no album I love from start to end.

I'm pretty sure Emerson influenced a lot in what concerns prog keyboard playing, by the way..

It confuses and saddens me to read comments sl*g.ing off ELP on a progressive rock site. After all, I do not criticise indie/ emo/ goth music on their sites.

If independently emotional Goths came here and criticised ELP then I'd find some logic in what you say, but they don't. Of course you don't have to be an independent emotive Goth to criticise Red Lorry Yellow Lorry or The Marcfh Violets, nor would it be considered a sin to do so. The perpencity for fans within a genre to criticise one of their own bands is not unusual nor is it saddening, it is healthier than glibly accepting everything an artist does is perfect or every artist is beyond reproach, or worse still that no dissent is ever permitted so that aslong as one person likes something then no one is allowed to speak out against it.

There is a difference between criticism and the derogatory comments in this thread in the same way as there is between respect and 'glibly accepting everything an artist does is perfect or every artist is beyond reproach'.
