I was looking after it too. I've only listened to the two Genesis covers from it and they are quite awesome. Any flash review?

The Road Back Home isn't an immediate recommendation.

I have it and enjoy it . . .

On the other hand, I have no problem with shorter poppier songs.  If you're getting it for prog craziness then you'll be sadly disappointed.  If you don't scoff at a three minute pop tune done by great musicians, then you may like it.  The release itself was designed to appeal to a wide range of people, most of which are not Flower King fans already.

It's kind of like Flower Kings Lite.  It gets you hooked enough to buy the upgrade.  If you already have the professional edition, getting the lite version can be a little underwhelming.

I do find it interesting and a fun CD.  He took the first part of "I Am the Sun, Part 2" and kept it as a separate piece very light and poppy and (as I've mentioned before) a favorite in our car / house.

On a totally unrelated note, my daughter that you've all heard about for a while now has turned 5 and is developing a taste for music.  She's very good at picking up songs from the car and singing them later.  I've caught her singing Francis Dunnery and Journey now.  It's pretty cool to watch.

I wasn't trying to sell my bands to anyone on here - they are just a couple of cheesy covers bands who play pubs, parties, weddings, etc.

I just thought that a few people might appreciate the Sgt Pepper pastiche.

I'd say, for the fan, it's definitely worthy of getting.  If for no other reason than the liner notes for each song with Stolt explaining how they were recorded, what equipment he used, why he remixed it and/or changed things.  There are some new guitar solos and even some new vocals.  Personally, I thought it was worth buying just to hear the remixed and remastered Retropolis material, which includes one of my favorite FK songs of them all, The Road Back Home (which, of course, is the name of the CD).

Anyway, Tom is correct in stating it is Flower Kings lite, but I think for any fan that has all the albums, it's worth having this as well.  I don't listen to it very often, but it is a nice addition and as I said the liner notes are great.

For what it's worth, I thought the Sgt Pepper thing was very cool.  So was the other gig poster you posted.  I wish I was in one band, let alone two.  I spent most of my life determined to only play what I wanted to play.......now I wish I had compromised a bit and stretched out, as it's pretty much impossible to find people who just want to learn difficult to play material for fun (since there is zero money to be made playing it anywhere within a hundred miles of where I live).

Gus,

I've been in both sides of your band dilemma.  I've played in an all original project with difficult key changes and random chaos thrown in all over the place to a country cover band.  (no, I'm not a huge country fan).

I will say, as a twenty something the original music was the only way to go at the time.  Now, as a forty something, its a blast just to get on stage.  Oddly enough, the country band had the biggest stage that I've ever played on.  Now, I'm in a Styx / Journey tribute band and it's a blast.  Both approaches are fun and bring a lot of gratification.

Nov,

I wouldn't sweat Barney's remarks.  You just have to picture him as an angry Homer Simpson.  Any time throws a sax at him, he's going to react like its a floating ball of fire ants and do everything that he can to distance himself form the horror of reed instruments.  I'm thinking that he was abused in band or something, maybe menaced by a batch of baritones, mocked by oboes, angered by the English (horns).  Just suggest delivering a batch of clarinets to his house and he'll be quivering in the corner.

I often just say what I see, as you know I'm not a big fan of the saxophone in progressive rock - I don't mind it in Jazz though as it seems to fit.....I just don't see a sax as a prog instrument - but thats only MY Opinion.
I'm not fat or yellow - so Homer Simpson isn't me - I'm sort of a northern England version of Richard Dawkins mentality meets the Adam charicature off FK's A & E - Only a bit more hairy - I also think that clarinet is perfectly acceptible in prog as would be the cor anglais..........and I was once chased about two miles across Manchester by the Jon Belushi appreciation society (Northern England branch) - but fortunately they were all wearing suits and also their shades and pork pie hats kept falling off so I clean escaped.....Cool

Didn't mean to black your eye - the Sgt Pepper Pastiche was amusing - I went to a wedding in a posh yorkshire hotel - and they had a sixties tribute band on - and one of them piped up and complained that some of the geezers at the back weren't dancing - so I walked up to the lead singer and said - play something remotely good and I'll headbang with the rest of em.....but they carried on with "lipstck on your collar" or some other godawful boy meets girl three minute trash......Why couldn't they have done a cover of "Ghost of Perdition" or summat.....

i love that poster.  damn, as i said i would stare at that thing forever at spencer gifts or the record store.  it's not as hot as i remember though.

nov, styx/journey band!  awesome.  i saw styx and yes summer 11 and styx blew the roof off.  i also saw styx in a small casino which was so fun. also saw journey/def leppard.  say what you will about he summer classic rock circuit, seeing those bands live is one hell of a good time.  one hit after another!  i was in a touring jamband in the 90s.  we played all original but were influenced by phish, grateful dead.  interestingly, our music was a bit heavy and dark.  one fan said we sounded like santana with king crimson.  go figure.  i played keys and i loved the songs with lots of parts.  20 min songs were so fun but a nightmare pulling together.  my other favorite mode is acoustic a la neil young.  never really played in a straight rock band.  my dead cover band is now defunct.  it was for fun and charity and it got too serious.  i told the drummer that he was patronizing and he just couldn't go on.

infandious, thanks for the info on RBH.  i'm gonna get it.  i love all that tech detail stuff as well as listening for changes in remixes.  also, it seems that it would be a good family car album.

finally, ironically i am on a huge Tangerine Dream trip right now.  their first albums are so out there.
Stardust we are.

I'd have loved to have played mixed doubles with her on my side.....Suddenly the game of tennis would be of slightly more interest to me than Black V Orange slug racing.....

I'm getting curious. I love TFK for their prog sound, of course, but I also enjoy a lot some their more relaxed songs, like Cosmic Lover, Different People of Ghost of the Red Cloud. Some are among my favourites by them. Getting a more poppish TFK records could be a very interesting thing.

Holy Crap, now I know that I am the identical twin(much less hairy) separated at birth to Barney.

Oh boy, I had no idea how much musical talent we have here in this little sub-forum.  All the guys here in tribute bands playing out in big clubs, etc...  I am a bit jealous.

Would it help if I said I played guitar in a RUSH cover band or that I played a duet for over an hour with Keith Emerson???

@ytse: i love cosmic lover.  i think it's the only one the kids and my wife like too.

@DM: dude, we could have a styx/dead/rush/journey cover band!  what would the name be?  i'll have to think about that.  and as far as the 2 year old goes, does she have some baby mozart in 5.1?

@barney: cosmic joker...love it.

y'all are my cosmic lover!  especially dark shade and infandous, of course.

Hidden jems can be found on all the Flokis CD's - My Cosmic Lover is possibly the most accessible and catchy toon that can be found on any FK's CD - I think I'll give BITWOA a spin later on tonight. the first two tracks are excellent and the quality throughout is much better than a lot of the later CD's IMHO....

Brilliant Rob, one of the best I've seen for a while.  Mad dog presses the button, just like the days of George Dubya LOL.

It's really weird, most Americans I've spoken to (yes, how did I get into a politics discussion at a Stevie Nicks concert at The Joint in Las Vegas LOL)  are desperate to see the back of Obama yet on this side of the pond we're scratching our heads wondering how you guys could possibly vote in Romney.  Might he improve the economy?  Well I think the recession is on the way out so yes it might well improve, but that'd be the same no matter who was in power, just like over here.  However if Romney does make it in to the White House if I was Syrian or Iranian I'd be investing in a Kevlar Air Raid shelter, pronto!!
