I think the style of dubstep Skrillex has popularized is catchy, fun, club friendly kind of music, and isn't necessarily bad in and of itself, but it is somewhat sad that people will hear Skrillex and say "I hate dubstep" when they've never heard "real" dubstep that is nothing like his style of music.

Yeah very true. So are you implying that Skrillex isn't really representative of his genre of music? I don't really have a basis on that since I've only heard a couple of some true, representative dubstep tunes, but I can tell you that I've enjoyed them greatly compared to Scary Monsters.

I'm no expert on the electronic genre but I like some of Skrillex's songs, say, about a third of his full catalog, and Brostep in general is pretty likeable for me. "Real" dubstep is a little more challenging to me and hard to get my head around.

Yeah, a lot of my friends are big into Electronic and related genres and they're always suggesting me certain artists and such. One friend gave me Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites to borrow. This is when the dubstep was becoming a big phenomenon, and almost a fashion, if that doesn't sound too pretentious? I didn't know what to expect, but I put it on and I was kind of in shock - I really hadn't heard anything like beforehand. Mind you, I wasn't experienced with electo before that either too, so it was a ear opener. I still can't really get into it though - it's too in your face or something. Maybe I just don't like the electronic rhythms? Which albums did you listen to Andrew?

k, so my estimation of liking a third of his catalog was wrong

I prefer the spacious, relaxed feel of Burial-type dubstep to the aggressive in your face Skrillex style stuff, it makes me wish I lived in a big city so I could wander around empty streets at 3 am listening to music.
