I find that prog is quite limited here in Toronto. The selection is porous. I think I've amassed thousands of CDs over my 31 year tenure on this Planet and 90% of my CDs I definately bought online. That's just the lay of the land here.

Sort of unexpected: When I was younger we would put on Saturday Night Oldies on this one radio station. Mostly it was just your typical Elvis, Mamas and the Papas, etc. (So, mostly songs about jilted lovers, lovers dying, lovers betraying each other, and other related themes.) Needless to say, when it came on every once in a while, In The Court of the Crimson King stood out. A lotLOL (I was only 10ish or so, though, so I didn't recognize it as prog.)

Unexpected: My dad turns on the radio one night, and The Who's 5:15 is playing. After that ends, the DJ comes on "...up next, 2112!" (The station was playing songs with numbers in the name for their Top Eight at Eight, by the numbers edition.) That was pretty cool, even if they only played Overture and the Temples.

Unexpected: I get Twitter just for the hell of it, just in case it lets me keep up to date with bands. So I follow a few, and about two days later, the guitarist of the Fierce and the Dead is following me (hadn't heard of them before).

Very unexpected: I show a friend the Animals as Leaders music video (for C.A.F.O.) on YouTube, and he's like "hey, that reminds me of this!" and sends me a link to An Endless Sporadic's Anything (which I hadn't heard before).

@ProgFollower on Twitter. Tweet me muzak.

Not a public place, but ... I've just seen this Volkswagen Passat commercial on mute. This dude was drumming his ass off in the car, so I figured it's gotta be something good. I turned the sound on and ... it was Rush's "Fly by Night". How about that?

😄 I recently walked into a bar in called the RHINO, on king street west and they were playing GENESIS's A TRICK OF THE TAIL. Couldn't believe my ears. I was so happy. My friend looked at me dumbfounded. Lol

I do that too. When I do hear something I recognize I start jumping up and down and pointing it out to everyone. They usually look at me strange.

In basic training, I couldn't listen to any music for about four months, except maybe one of our drill sergeants had a cellphone within earshot and then it was mostly rap/top 40 stuff. Then one time (I don't know why) we had a boombox in the barracks and everyone was listening as one guy scrolled through the channels. It landed on a station playing In Your Eyes for a few seconds, but the guy was like "We're not listening to this crap" and moved on to the modern rock station. I had to bite my tongue.

Then when we graduated we got a pass to go to the PX where there was one of those internet-enabled jukeboxes. I played Close to the Edge in its entirety, probably annoying a bunch of people but at that point I didn't care. LOL

Peter Gabriel. Sorry, I didn't think there would be any ambiguity there. Tongue

I wish my local supermarket played prog. This afternoon, while shopping, I got to listen to some bitch who set fire to the rain again...

Great story. And I'm not surprised that your dumb drill sargeant didn't want to listen to P.G. That knuckle head is probably more into Spinal Tap or something. Lol. Anyway live that you got play CLOSE TO THE EDGE. nice move

Beware prog in public places!  It's the system understanding that as the demographic that digs rock of all sorts ages, they can simply plug our old favorites - or, even worse, more obscure tunes that are mainly known by hard core fans - to gain style points and more loyal shoppers.  This stuff is researched....millions are spent on how to grab shoppers, from music and scents to placement of items and colors on the walls!  Be careful out there....they ain't trying to be hip, they hire aging progsters to undermine our thought process.  While shopping:  put in earphones, put on eye shades, you know where to put the cork!

I'm only half kidding, man.  It's a jungle out there.

In the movie "People Like Us," one of the characters spoke about being backstage at a King Crimson concert....don't rent the movie because of this, but I did have to sit up at that mention!

I heard Close To The Edge on Q107 Classic Rock (Toronto) the other day. Trust me, that never happens, ever. The DJ probably went for his lunch break, so he slapped something on that would keep him busy for a while! LOL

Oh, how I wish I was there - to hear at least one shorty on the radio.

I was looking for a shirt in an outlet store of a famous chain of shops. They passed the whole CD2 of PULSE and I have taken a very long time before buying something. Yesterday evening on TV, Comfortably Numb (studio version) was used to comment a special about violence and stalking on women.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I heard Black Cat by Gentle Giant at Six Flags over the Summer. Also I hear Wish You Were Here, Money, Hey You, and occasionally Have A Cigar at this diner I regularly go to. Prog is extremely popular on TV. Countless Pink Floyd references on major networks, Aqualung has been sung on 30 Rock as well as played in Supernatural, along with Carry on Wayward Son, and Dear. Mr Fantasy. Thick as a Brick has been sung by Martin Prince on the Simpsons for the school's talent show, until Lisa hits him with a chair because of its length. Also the Doctor Venture Episode"Perchance to Dean" made my jaw drop, Doc Venture reveals his interest in Prog Rock when he shows Dean his extensive prog rock collection, and when Dean questions the cover of ITCOTCK Doc Venture tells him that he isn't ready to enter The Court of The Crimson King. Prog is apparently not the taboo subject that most of us believe to be.

Just last week, I heard "The Whistler" by Jethro Tull in my local supermarket.
He looks at this world and wants it all... so he strikes, like Thunderball!
