Do cephalopods (octopuses, squids, cuttle fish) sleep? My two year old nephew asked me about this yesterday. Instead of googling for an hour or two I ask you.

^ it seemed reasonable to me too, knowing that they were nocturnal and the biology of their eye is more "advanced" than ours (the don't have a blind-spot), so yes, I googled it to be sure:

Apparently, not only do they sleep, they enter a REM sleep phase and could possibly even dream. |

![]() I love this one:
Okay - not a huge belly-laugh, but still amusing that it's the 18% best answer.
-us is singular and -i is plural, however, octopus is not a Latin word, it's Greek so the plural should be octopudes though octopuses is the acceptable form (octopi is just being pretentious)

Having watched enough episodes of QI we must have learnt something from the Great Lord Fry by now... if only the correct pluralisation of octopus

Thanks! In Greek it’s κεφαλόποδα (cephalopods), meaning head-feet. Octopus is χταπόδι, meaning eight legs. I find it extremely interesting that not only do they sleep, they probably dream as well. Milo is an intelligent young lad so I think he will understand. Next week we’ll go to the aquarium in the old town so he can see these fascinating animals.

Octopuses are supposed to be one of the most intelligent creatures out there, so it doesn't surprise me that they may dream. They also are good with some marsala sauce. |
