It's Nice to see that people on this thread are grooving to Anima Mundi - Cubas answer to the Symphonic Masters of North America & Europe - and derivative it most certainly is - but such gradiose soaring themes - I love "The way" - quite possibly a CD already in my top 20 of all time.....It's just superb from the first miniute to the last...it's a MUST for any symphonic prog collection - if you haven't got it BUY IT NOW!!!

Have not heard Anima Mundi, might have to check them out. I have only one Nexus album, I guess the previous one to their new one. It sounds good, but just does very little for me. I will agree that the hammond sound is awesome and the best feature of the album, but the tunes don't move me at all.
zuma, that alternate artwork just shows they picked the right one for the cover ![]() As for non-prog, I don't listen to the stuff much anymore. One album I think everyone should hear is The Scorpions "Lonesome Crow". Of course, it actually could be called prog related, since its got long tracks and strange effects. Anyway, if you think you know the Scorpions but haven't heard that album, then think again. Aside from that, I'm also one that still enjoys Led Zep, but find most of their stuff I've heard way too many times to really want to hear it again. I do enjoy some bluegrass every now and then, but couldn't really name any groups specifically (and, of course, I really like progressive grass, but I guess that's technically prog anyway). Also love a lot of celtic and Irish folk music, but couldn't name any groups (usually catch the "fresh aire" program on our public radio on the weekends......some of that stuff is downright proggy). As mentioned, Grateful Dead never get old for me, but I have to be in the mood. Other "jam bands" don't do much for me, though Umphrey's kicks ass in a live setting. But again, they are on the archives. Edited by infandous - October 08 2012 at 07:38 |

^ I like Scorpions a lot, but I never gave Lonesome Crow a listen. I must check it in the next days...

Check it out, just don't expect it to sound anything like their other albums (aside from the vocals). It features Michael Schenker on guitar, tearing it up at 16 years old! Great stuff. Apparently, the bassist and drummer for that one album were jazz session guys |

Thank you. But which one? It's funny most of the non-prog is from years ago (except Massive Attack triggered by a TV-show using Teardrops in their title sequence). Ever since I discovered PA it's been nothing but prog. Why bother with anything else if you know where you can get your fix for sure. |

Barney, derivative of what? I don't have much of the symphonic classics (couple of Yes & Genesis, no ELP). It's probably the reason why I don't get the Flower Kings hate either? I read a (dutch) interview with Anima Mundi where they talk about the difficulties they had recording their first album. The instruments aren't even available in Cuba! Rock music is/was considered to be a very nasty, western influence! |

Darn I do have lots of camels (the healthy kind) and spectral morning's the only one I own (have to listen to it again).
Don't worry I didn't think you were being negative. The Way must be one of the most positive uplifting pieces of music I've ever heard. Really wonderful. |

i still love Physical Graffiti (minus Kashir). i was really into Phish in the 90s. it was fun to be a fan as the grew to stadiums. their last few albums have not been good, but they had quite a run there of very proggy albums. it was only a matter of time before i 'got into' prog. i've not seen Umphrey's or heard much of them. i like that they do some ambient/beat stuff in their jams. when i was younger i was aboslutely into everything...except top 40. i think in my 20s i looked into everything and gave it all a college try. i've just kind of settled into my canon of artists. TFK being one of them. i do like the artwork they choose too, it definitely fits the music.

yes, for sure. I have been a fan since American Garage. I saw PMG in 2005, he and Mays were mind blowing. How bout a brief review of the show? |

Stardust we Are - is the best to start with in terms of coming to terms with the Wealth of music offered by just one double CD. Single CD's Back in the world - and space revolver are also good shouts.
The you have to Buy - Flower Power - and let it's power sneak up on you spin by spin (CD1)..until you have it as a contender for top 10 prog epics of all time...

i missed that 2005 tour! saw the group in 1997 for imaginary day tour. amazing. also saw the new trio in 2006? it was with christian mcbride and antonio sanchez. anyway, the show was amazing. kind of a mix of all his projects. he had antonio sanchez on drums, chris potter on sax, and ben white on bass. they played a bunch of stuff from the new Unity album. def not straight ahead stuff, more fusion. he opened with the pikasso 42 string guitar! also did a loop jam and had some mini orchestrion stuff set up. that was neat. pat did a duo piece with each player. solaris with potter was so fast. first encore was Are You Going With Me!!! was not expecting that. so good. it was a small venue so seeing pat jam the synth guitar up close was awesome. the second encore was a solo medley on nylon string. i heard last train and phase dance in there. he actually f'd up one part ![]() my faves are Offramp, American Garage, Live Trio, PMG. it's all good though...except Song-X and No Tolerance for Silence:)

I saw Metheny group back in 1991 I think. Had no idea who he was, but my dad used to get tickets from a friend for shows at the college auditorium, mostly jazz groups (seen quite a few great shows there). I was mightily impressed. Couldn't tell you who was in the band, only that it was at least 7 people, including Pat. Some of the tunes were a bit elevator, smooth jazz kind of stuff, but even then I couldn't help but be impressed by his guitar playing. As I recall it was 100% electric, though he may have played some nylon. It was a long time ago now. Anyway, I've never bought any of his albums, though I've been meaning to for years. I know which ones are the proggy ones, so I'll have to get around to that eventually. |

Infandous-
yeah, when i first heard methany i thought he was a bit cheesy. however, i grew to really love his melodies and his 70s stuffs is produced very well. btw, did you go to many dead shows? i saw my fair share in the late 80s and 90s. by the end it was pretty bad, but still fun. |
