For some reason I have never fancied Gentle Giant - There is a hole in my collection that will be filled one day....
I am very suspicious of anybody who would profess to liking Abba, Celine Dion or Dexy's midnight runners...Paul Simon definately comes into that category also - but then again he's another born-again who suddenly loathes his one time partner coz he likes to shag men instead of women.......it takes religion to really poison one's mind against the life choices of those born free to make them....Maybe he was gutted coz he never tried to shag him....Wink Mind u those life choices could equally apply to thinking that Celine Dion is a drop dead gorgeous minx who is the best singer on the planet earth....Geek

I decided to listen to Karmakanic....Who's the boss in the factory...Marvellous stuff - I was very impressed with Lalle Larsson as the support act for the FK's - solo pianoing of supreme ability. And I saw he was keyboards for Karmakanic - so I gave it  whirl - I still think that the opening track is the weakest - and the title track is AWESOME...
But still eclipsed by 1969 - from  In a perfect World......Why listen to non prog when you have fookin hundreds of classic  CD's...stick your fookin OK Computer up your collective arses....yahooo..................

1.  Pat Metheny Group-First Album (kind of proggy, sorry)

4. Gillian Welch-Time The Revelator
5. Grateful Dead-Reckoning

of course, these change daily :-)

Oooohhh, I'll definitely have a go at this:-

1.  Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
2.  Future Sound of London - Environments 2
3.  Plaid - Greedy Baby
4.  The Black Dog - Spanners
5.  The Orb - The Dream

It was really tough to pick just 5, but for the moment I'll go for these .  Another album I love is by an artist Tom included, Sasha.  His album Emfire is simply magnificent and features a 40 minute track no less.  So Barney should like that oneWink.

I'm a huge fan of electronic music, both the type you find on PA and more so the type you don't.  I consider modern electronica/IDM to be truly progressive music.  A lot of the music played by the above bands would probably be considered prog rock if you substituted the electronics for guitars, bass, drums etc.

good replies.  it's not surprising that the 'other' music we like is, well, progressive ;)  my favorite non-prog band is the grateful dead, but hell, they're progressive.  at least space rock.  i also really like acoustic music.  there's actually a genre called progressive bluegrass.  anyway, good calls.

So, is Paul Simon really a born again christian?  is garfunkel gay?  never knew this stuff.  not that it matters :)

oh, i'm heading out tonight to see pat methane's new quartet in a really small venue.  cannot wait!

1. Led Zeppelin - IV
2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
3. The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta
4. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
5. King's X - King's X

4 out of 5 are here on PA as prog related.  I suppose if you want non-PA bands I would include the 4 with The Police:

1. Pearl Jam - Ten
2. Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz
3. Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers - BloodSugarSexMagic

I threw this together pretty quickly.  If I went through my entire collection on a different day I might come up with a totally different list.  Hmm.. Def Leppard's Pyromania springs to mind as I type this. LOL

Let's have a go at this (in no particular order):
Dire Straits - brothers in arms
Joe Satriani - engines of creation
Paul Simon - graceland
Massive Attack - mezzanine
Simple Minds - new gold dream (81/82/83/84)

And just so I don't lose any credit here (in a particular order)
1 space revolver
2 unfold the future
3 / 4 the sum of no evil
3 / 4 banks of eden
5 stardust we are
Thanks !! Your topics always so good and informative. I like you talk.

I am currently REALLY into Nexus - Just played - Detras del Umbral - some slightly derivative stuff - lots of Emerson style Hammond and bombastic synths - and track 10 is basically a Voyage of the Heirophant lift - but it's FAR superior in my opinion - with absolute genius swirling keys and at 3:37 far too short...just as i'm really getting into it it fades out - Loads of ambience and simply can't be beaten in terms of keyboard oriented prog - the singing in spanish may put people off - but I just class it as another instrument and groove.....
Also decided to play the Ascension version of Starship Trooper - the Wurm extension is just AWESOME...Wakeman just showing what he can do...why would anydody want to listen to bleeding Dire straits when they could be expanding into more prog avenues....get into Pampas prog from Argentina - you won't regret it!!!

Well I got all 3 disk from Cuba's Anima Mundi.
But I've only really listened to the way (and liked it so much that I got the other 2).
That's also highly keyboard oriented sympho prog and very bright, happy and positive (even more than The Flower Kings)

Pyromania and Hysteria are great albums.  As is Zep IV.  I really can't listen to them anymore though.  Maybe a bit of presence.  I've tried to get into Pearl Jam to no avail.  Of course, I liked Ten when it came out.  I never thought I'd say it, but I'm pretty sick of classic rock these days and really don't like any new music other than new prog.  Glad TFK is around :-)  I need to revisit King's X too.  Oh, and Anima Mundi are great!

Keys is a great comp!!  love that starship trooper.  it was great to see yes have a final go at being tight and revisiting some rare classics.

I really like that "alternate" cover art for BoE.

And here I was thinking uggs were medicine for the common cold.

Don't you think that alternative cover is way too dark for The Flower Kings?
I like it but it's more appropriate for a metal band: a dramatic bank of eden
