Is the style of music one in which hits are uncommon? Essentially, I'm asking to see whether they are an obscure rock band or an influential band in a niche genre.

Hard to answer. I would say that the style would  spawn hits. This band just didn't seem to manage it despite good critical reaction. And I suppose thay are quite obcure and I cant imagine who they influenced.
