i think neal's most accessible solo stuff is disc 2 of testimony 2.  two awesome prog pop tunes and an epic that is compelling all the way through.

I was going to say, Testimony 2 is my #3 after ? and SS. Yea the second disc is great, though not related to the main album. I heard the first Testimony before the second one came out, so I'm never sure if I should recommend T2 or not, as I don't know if one should hear the first one first, even though I think T1 is a little bloated.

Testimony 1 is still my favorite Neal Morse solo album.

Yes, One is quite long, but I found T2 to be more long and difficult to listen to.. Not a favourite of mine so much...

I don't know. One's flow feels weird, and I feel like it should be over after The Separated Man, but there's still like 4 more songs, 25 more minutes of music. Testimony 2 flies by for me.

The story would be so so so incomplete if that happened... I can see like musically the later half is not as powerful and proggy, but lyrically its the best and ends the story

I'm not saying get rid of any of the songs, I just feel like the track list could have been re-arranged a bit.

I don't have any Neal solo albums, and think it's about time I took the plunge. I was tempted to get Momentum as it was cheap in HMV, but I think it's best to ask those in the know what they'd recommend.

For those who don't me, I'm a big fan of TFK  and also like Transatlantic.  I like SB to a lesser extent but very much enjoy V and Snow, both are great albums.

Any recommendations?

I'd say go for either One or Sola Scriptura.

Of the three (non-Whirlwind) Transatlantic epics, if you prefer Stranger go for Sola Scriptura but if you prefer Duel or Above then go for One.

Funny, my favorite TA song is All Of The Above, and my favorite Neal solo album is Sola Scriptura.  I'm not that crazy about Stranger In Your Soul, and One is probably my least favorite Neal solo album.  "?" is pretty much tied with Sola for me.

Still, I started with One and thought it was okay, though it did keep me from getting another one until Sola came out (when I bought both that and "?" at the same time).

Ah, I liked Sola Scriptura but found parts of it to be too heavy for my poor soft little ears. There is a part just like that in Stranger. Like you, I prefer All of the Above out of the three, but One is probably my favourite NM Album. Strange Big smile.

Incidentally, I've only ever listened to ? twice through, and it never grabbed me. I'll have to give it another go given how highly everyone seems to rate it.

"?" is one of his most accesible albums IMO and the tracks aren't too much long, so it flows very well.

This thread could easily be renamed to "Authors of Confusion", haha...

If anyone seeks here what to listen and what to avoid from Neal's discography, he'll certainly be confused.

God bless his creativity... LOL

Actually, it flows very well because the whole album is a single song.  Well, a suite, anyway.  It took me several listens to get into it because of that fact (much like The Whirlwind).

Well, hopefully what people unfamiliar will take away is that fact that ALL his albums are extremely similar.  He has a formula that he sticks to no matter what.  If you like that formula, like I do, then you are always happy and know what to expect (though it doesn't always work for me, Lifeline being the best example of that for me).

It's a bit like the Ozric Tenticles.  Once you've heard one album, you've heard them all.  If you like it enough, you'll want more.  If not, then you won't need to bother checking out anything else.  Though to be fair to Neal, his albums are not THAT similar (unlike the Ozrics), seeing as how I don't care for Lifeline and find One to be just okay.  So it pays to at least try a couple to see if anything moves you.

To me, one of the greatest treasures I found in music is Neal Morse and his works.
They have really inspired me and taken me to a new level.
I became a born again religious person because of him.
His lyrics have quite a meaning, depth, passion and emotion. Unlike any I have heard before.
Every time I listen to his emotional vocal segments, I get a chill in my spine.
I have heard his Transatlantic stuff and I really liked his vocals and keyboarding skills.
I initially haven't heard much of his solo albums and expected them to be mainly vocal dominant with little emphasis on instruments.
I was completely wrong.
The first album I heard was Sola Scriptura
And man, I was blown away.
I thought Neal was only a great keyboard player and occasionally played acoustic guitar.
But when I heard that intro riff on The Door, I as shocked. Is that Neal on guitar? Yes!
This guy is equally good in guitaring as he is in keyboard I feel!
And as I went on to his next album, Testimony, I received the shock of my life.
I cant believe one guy, just one guy, wrote a 120 min song (Although the album is split into pieces, its considered one full song)
And to top it all, continue with another 120 minute segment Testimony 2!
Totally, 240 minutes of progressive music on one theme!
That is beyond my contemplation!
And Testimony is his best album! The guitar playing, the keyboard playing, the vocals, the lyrics, the orchestration. All are brilliant! This guy is a living legend for me. TO come up with albums typically 60-100 mins long every year! And that too which are consistently good. Only Neal Morse can do it.
His recent new album Momentum also was good. I liked World Without End in particular.
He has become one of my most favourite musicians of all time.
And importantly, he is one of those rare good souls who really wanted others to "wake up" and realise the beauty of God. Hats off to you, Mr.Morse. You are a blessed soul!

and from your other post: I became a born again religious person because of him.
First of all, you most likely have paid the highest compliment to an artist by indicating you have had a positive life changing event which was influenced by his music.  In Neal's music, it is not without controversy due to the subject matter.  Keep the faith.

My 5 are:
1) One (not sure why it is not listed much in this thread)
2) Testimony 1
3) ?
4) Testimony 2
5) Whirlwind
PS-Only have heard Sola Scripture once and for some reason have not gotten it yet or Momentum, so I could not rate these yet.

Oh yeah, have a blast Catcher10!
