I've never tried it, but in principle the linearity of the amp can be precisely controlled and be made to compensate for any non-linearity inherent in the system. Some modern Class D designs use the same sigma-delta modulation techniques that has revolutionised codec designs used in CD and mp3 players.

^ Well there are many artists where the record labels do not allow online purchase thru iTunes

I think Mongofa means you can't buy KC downloads online anywhere.

Anywhere but here: http://www.dgmlive.com/archive.htm Music in the DGM Live library is available for purchase in FLAC and MP3 file formats. You may download shows using BitTorrent software or using your web browser. Edited by Slartibartfast - October 02 2011 at 07:32 |

Of course the CD is useless but there will always be the "vinyl" types. Even with CDs. They will demmand to have CDs and only listen to music if it comes from a CD.

I made a rash claim about building my own Headphone amps a year ago, so thought you'd like to see how that panned-out:
My ambition is yet unfulfilled on this. I have all the component parts, including the nice shiney black case but haven't quite managed to squeeze all the electronics into the box yet. The bare amplifier and pair of iPlod batteries works well and sounds okay. The unforseen problem is the USB charging circuit for the iPlod batteries which is proving to be a real bugger to make on my kitchen table due to the miniscule size of the surface-mount components. At the moment I have shelved this idea but may return to it later.
It lacks lettering because I haven't decided how to do that yet - the traditional home-constructor method is to use Letraset and I hate that, so I'm looking into other methods such as silk-screen and laser-cut lettering. I have put a pair of speaker terminals on the back because I can, but realistically it can only drive hi-Z speakers because of the limited space available for heat-sinking within the box. Because it is a Class-A design it will generate a lot of heat and while the transistors are on heat-sinks that are thermally connected to the aluminium case I'm not going to run it at theoretical full power (around 10W per channel). However it drives my Mid-Z headphones wonderfully with barely any background noise and thankfully hardly any mains buzz (I used a screen military grade toroidal transformer, plenty of decoupling/filtering and paid special attention to ac wiring in the confinds of the case). In retrospect I should have either used a bigger case or put the PSU in a seperate box to ensure zero coupling between the AC and the audio signal just to make my life a little easier, but as it is it is no worse than anyother AC-powered HP amp I've heard. All-in-all I'm rather proud of it. (I haven't added up how much it cost me to build, but I guess it was around £70... which isn't too scary compared to a ready built one off-the-shelf).
I have also purchaed the FiFo E11 portable HP amp I mentioned before - it cost me £44.42 from Amazon at the time (the price has since gone up) and it is a little gem. I love it because it can drive my Howland West waferlite headphones, something that none of my mp3 players or the little E5 can do, (it has a 3-position gain switch for low, medium and high impedance headphones). I used it extensively while on holiday in France and never needed to recharge the battery (my Archos-5 media player on the otherhand needed recharging everyother night).

Dean that is really nice looking.......exterior build quality looks real good~! Are the grooves on top venting slots for heat dispersion?

they look great Dean-- you say they'll also induce particle biotransposition?

No, they are just cosmetic adornment in the al-u-mini-um extrusion. Heat dispersion is by conduction not convection, hence the imposed lower power rating.
...and then some. I failed to mention that the pre-amp stage is passive, that aids transmogrifluction of the metaparalagial ingress of phase-dependant wavefronts, reducing them to harmless occulusions within the refibrourous aquisition process. Of course I need not explain that further since it is obvious to all that this can only lead to an improved induction of said particle biotransposition. Well spotted David.
