Wow! That's quite a size for TFK. Where was this and how many seats did they sell?
As much as I'd love to see the FK's have more success, I'd much rather see them in smaller venues with good sound than some big, echoing arena setting where the volume is deafening.
|
I agree but I sometimes dream of seeing them being able to afford the kind of production that Genesis or Pink Floyd used to put on or that the likes of Coldplay and Muse put on these days. They really deserve it in my opinion. Imagine the end of "I Am The Sun" with the full "Afterglow" treatment - gives me goosebumps just thinking about it

Indeed.
Nov, if you're going to the Leamington Spa gig on saturday we should meet and have a beer. |
I will indeed be at the Leamington gig - and the London one
To help you recognise us, one of the bunch is a Welsh girl with amazing frizzy blond hair
Alternatively, pm me your mobile number
Where will you be travelling from?
|
i pm you guys my mobile number so you can call me every 5 minutes during the concert
yeah, i like small rooms too. i was lucky to get on the phish train in 1990 and i saw them in places as big as my kitchen. hearing that intricate music in a warm environment is so cool. i just think it would be neat for the TFK boys to just rip through it in a big arena. i just have this fantasy of hearing church of your heart in that context with a bunch of backing musicians and singers and that PHAT organ break down played by Tomas on a real B3!

Aye - I am not that fond of the old saxophonist - I consider it a JAZZ instrument - wherever you have a sax bit - should have been a mini-moog/hammond organ/guitar twiddle backed by luscious mellotron........
This is possibly why i think that VDGG is WAY overrated - that and I hate the singing for some reason....

Don't get me started, I got something by Van der Graaff Generator out of the bargin bin years ago and am still bitter over the loss of that dollar. It's good for clearing the house and that's about it. Seriously, I think the conversation goes something like this . . .
Tom: I think I'm going to put on some Van der Graff . . . Marianne (wife of Tom): Hey Tori (daughter of Tom) Daddy needs some alone time, let's go grocery shopping. Tom: But we just went shopping yesterday. Marianne: I'm certain there's something that we forgot.

Okay, it was actually a 1850 seat theater, it was Nearfest 2003 and it sold out. So I cheated a bit However, it WAS great to see them on a stage befitting their talents.......not to mention one where the 7 man lineup didn't seem crowded on stage. Generally though, I think they more than deserve the kind of production those bands you mentioned get.

Love, love, love Van der Graaf Generator. Easily in my top 10 bands of all time. Love saxophones as well, especially in prog rock. I could understand not liking Hammill's vocals, though I liked them the first time I heard them. The sax though..........I've known other people who couldn't stand the sound of it, and I just don't understand that at all. To each his own, I guess.

With VDGG, I generally refer to the sax playing as the sound of strangling cats, as that is what it reminds me of.

Scott, I think I've heard that before cause every time I hear the name of the band, my mind immediately goes to cats in pain. You've warped me . . . thanks for that!

When I think of the sound of cats being strangled, I think of James LaBrie, not VDGG. But again, to each his own.

Right then , where do I start - ooooh aye - testimony - I got it from EBAY - and it was a mouth watering 0.99p + 1.00 p & p - so I bid & won (10 minutes left) - bought from sombody in Devon...(I keep all my receipts - I am very anal with anything I buy)...that why my wife knows I'd never go with a prostitute - they don't do receipts..... VDGG - I hate the singing....Aye and the music is just tooo weird for me as well...looks like most on here share similar tastes more or less - except infandous obviously - I'll bet a tenner he's got a mangle and there is a shortage of cats in his neighbourhood..... Also looks like I'm at the gig this sunday with just me mate and No 2 son..... Whats with thos lists at the bottom of Scots postings??? I'm dead nosy me....

Sorry, don't know what a "mangle" is to you British folks. I do have a cat of my own, and she sounds much sweeter than any VDGG sax break However, as I've said, I completely understand why someone wouldn't enjoy the vocals. I guess the band as a whole is something of an acquired taste (though I acquired it right away). I tend to like a lot of avant stuff though, so perhaps that is why I enjoy it. I'm not strictly a sympho prog guy, though that is still my favorite sub genre to be sure.

I am going to see Rush tonight, so that makes up for not being able to see TFK for me, although I would love to see TFK. I really enjoyed the Karmakanic/Agents of Mercy show when they came here to Detroit. Unfortunately it was only me and about 20 of my "closest" friends there.
The lists in the bottom of my postings are me recording what I listen to on Last.FM. I scrobble the plays from my iPod to iTunes and from there they get recorded on Last.FM. Most of my music listening from the past 5 years has been recorded there.
