Goodness, I just found this via Facebook! Am I just not with it, or do PA readers know about this?
Excerpt: "Genesis, Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) will lead a line-up
of "prog rock gods" who will attend the first Progressive Music Awards,
to be held in the verdant surroundings of Kew Gardens, next month. The awards, created by Prog magazine, one of the few expanding publications in a declining print music market, will celebrate the pioneers, innovators and present-day torchbearers of the once-derided scene. Gavin Esler, the Newsnight anchor, who has confessed to a deep love of the flute-powered titans Jethro Tull, will present the awards." |

I just read it via Dean's post in another thread.
After so many years of history it's becoming increasingly difficult to define Prog and to award "the best whatever in Prog" but OK, regardless of how many objections to the nominees will certainly be argued, better trying that doing nothing.
BTW The Independent article mentions only a few nominees, here is the full list of categories and nominees

Also nominating acts such as Gazpacho, Touchstone, The Reasoning & Haken as best "New Blood" is a little daft.

Getting some mainstream TV coverage on BBC Breakfast this morning with short interviews with Rick Wakeman, Carl Palmer, Steve Hackett and Justin Hayward who all attended the awards ceromony. Apparently VDGG had their own table
Rick said he would do King Arthur On Ice again if he had the chance. Go on Rick please do it I would love to be there!

Peter Hammill won the award for 'Visionary' at the Prog
Awards dinner, and it was presented to him by Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt. Peter
won over some great acts (Hawkwind, Can, Kraftwerk, Kate Bush, Muse, Radiohead).
The first two photos are PH with Mikael Akerfeldt, the third is PH with Guy
Evans and Fish.

^ "The awards, created by Prog Magazine, were hosted by BBC Newsnight presenter Gavin Esler"
... Esler lives with rock violinist Anne Phoebe, who has toured with Jethro Tull and Roxy Music (filling Jobson's role on keys and fiddle) and records with The Trans Siberian Orchestra.

curiosity got the better of me and I downloaded the album Steeple off Amazon after listening to a few samples. Really good album , very retro , very early Wishbone Ash ,Tull (sixties version). Good songs ,great musicianship , very nice indeed. Good enough for an award?? Maybe

from the article:
Finally, John Wetton was given the honour of introducing the first Prog God, Rick Wakeman. But before the great man, and Prog columnist, came up to receive the award, there was a video montage celebrating his diverse and fascinating career, from session muso through Yes to being a Grumpy Old Man. However, it was all dwarfed by Wakeman’s hilarious banter – to call it a speech is to do this an injustice. He had the entire room in stitches as he praised the food and said he’d congratulated the chefs Neil and Roger, “And those aren’t their names, just what they were doing!”. But, on a serious note, he also praised prog’s considerable and continuing contribution to music through the years. It was a fitting conclusion to what had been a triumphant night.
