it's a party.  wouldn't it be hilarious if we started our own TFK convention a la Marillion and it became this huge thing and folks waited with baited breath for us to release where the next one would be.....'this year it's at DM's house!'

those ELP discs sound like they are amazing.  it's weird because i really have nothing to compare it too.  i don't thing i've ever heard a master for 5.1 album on a good system.  ignorance is bliss i guess.  anyway, if it's not to creepy to ask, where are you in North Carolina?  i'm in atlanta and have family in Greensboro.  i also get to Asheville about once a year.  oh, and i have friends in Boone :-)

Your timing is fortuitous indeed my friend!   I just returned from my 5.1 lair and saw your message.

My recent 5.1 is the new ELP 1st record and Tarkus on DVD-Audio(with 2 other CDs)for each, respectively.

36 years....

36 bloody years.....

I can't believe I waited 36 long years to hear this ELP music like this,  dare I say the way it was intended to sound.
Steven Wilson's mix is extraordinary, if a grammy award is worth anything, Steven should get buried in them for his work on the 2 ELP records.  Words can not describe.  It is breathtaking,  literally.

I'm not sure I can believe what I just heard.  I just played side 2 of Tarkus,  bits of side 1 and some of the 1st ELP
record.  Take A Pebble is like the best, jazz, rock, vocal, piano recording since the Bronze Age.Big smile

Dude,  I think you are in Georgia, I live in previously occupied but recently liberated,(but soon to be occupied again)
North Carolina.  You just need to cruise up 95 to check out my 5.1 studio.  I have tons of cold micro-brews in the fridge.  Darkshade will bring some Jersey Pizza down the Turnpike and we will be all set!

The real problem I have right now for setting up the girlfriends 5.1 is space.  We live in a tiny townhouse, and we just have not figured out how to deal with the speakers.  Also, we have been planning to move for a while now, and are just looking for the right place....and then have to get this place sold.  I know, I'm full of excuses.  It's why I never got my prog album recorded!

Understood, keep the idea in mind. When you do go for it you will regret not doing it decades earlier.  It only took me until I was just about 50 to do mine, so I waited also, but not by choice.  Ouch

TFK moved through the years to a more jazzy-improvised production. You should definitely check their early material they released in the 90s, just good ol' symphonic prog like Retropolis. Oh, and of course their latest album, Banks of Eden, that's quite good too.

Check his 90s material as well. Actually, his 1994 album, The Flower King, is considered the first "unofficial" TFK work, though it is a Roine's solo release, and the album from which it was named the band, so it is just the same awesome symph prog you'll find in their early releases. Hydrophonia is good too, nice instrumental rock.

This doesn't make any sense to me at all. The thing that I love about The Flower Kings (and it's the same with Genesis) is that the vast majority of their stuff is properly (and carefully) composed. I too am disinterested in 'jams' but TFK restrict this to when they stretch out a bit live or on the occasional experimental track on the albums. These are always the tracks that least interest me.

Agreed.  I happen to enjoy the experimental stuff and the live jamming quite a bit, but not as much as the full on "composed" epics.  The only album where they have a "20 minute jam", is Betchawannadancestoopid!, which is a hardcore fan only release.  I have it, and would have to say it's not really worth it even if you like their "jamming" stuff.  I guess an interesting curio for those of us who must have every single thing they release (like myself).  Actually, the longest jam on that, which is just shy of 19 minutes, is the one I like the most (it features some deconstruction of Day Tripper and I think another Beatles tune, but is all instrumental improv.  Again though, I would never actually recommend it to anyone, and doubt it's even possible to find a copy anymore.

There's a copy of it at my local shop and it's been sitting there for years. It's 25 or 30 bucks too. I always look at it, but I know what it is, even though I've never heard it. I'm very curious about it, and would like to hear it one day, but I don't want to drop that much dough on it. I'd rather get the other 2 Roine solo albums I don't have, and other TFK live albums first before getting that.

Yeah, that's one that Roine should make available as a really cheap download.  I would never pay that much for it.  I think I paid less than $20 for mine, but I can't remember.

yeah, i wish some of the less essential stuff was downloadable.  hell, even if roine set up a papal account and just emailed us a zip file.  that wouldn't require any infrastructure at all.  

btw, speaking of jams, i wonder if roine has ever thought about editing some of the improve stuff from over the years a la zappa.  that might be interesting.
