Has anyone seen a live DVD called `Pictures At An Exhibition - Special Edition' (I think) which states on the back `the most complete live presentation of the album' etc? The front cover is very similar to the album sleeve but with pictures of the band.

Does that mean that some of the footage has been lost/damaged, or was never shot? Is the quality of the available footage on that DVD decent?

It's only $10 (I really should have just grabbed the damn thing while I was there, but I'd already grabbed some other stuff), but is it worth my time going back to get it?

Thanks for any suggestions!
I have that DVD, though I haven't watched it in quite awhile. It did have songs that I hadn't seen before (I can't remember which ones they were off the top of my head), but the visuals were psychedelic throughout the additional songs. The performances were good, but the visuals made it barely watchable for me.

It is a shame that a complete ELP concert wasn't filmed on the Brain Salad Surgery Tour, with the projection screens etc. The "Get Me A Ladder" tour of early 73 would have also been great. Some footage appears in the Manticore Special video, but I suspect that footage of the entire concert either wasn't filmed or no longer exists.

I completely agree with you about the ELPowell album being the best since BSS. The tour was also outstanding! The set list was fantastic! Just a shame that it wasn't Palmer, although Cozy did a nice job.
You are probably aware of this, but there is a bootleg video of the Detroit show (That was my first ELP show) that is pretty decent for a home video shot concert.

This might be a repackaged version of one that I think was originally entited "Rock and Roll Your Eyes".

This seems to be it, if so it is indeed a longer version with extra tracks and I'd say it's surely worth the price you say especially if you don't have any previous versions and you have not seen ELP videos in their prime.

The psychedelic visuals on the instrumental parts are indeed a big shame and apparently they are still there in this version but there are enough minutes of clear image and the camera shooting is quite good for the age of the film.

For me having already the VHS and a DVD version called "Collector's Edition" I hesitate to purchase a new one for a few additional songs... (my Collectors Edition is just the original version (just PAAE) only that it's a double-face disc with the DVD on one side and audio CD of the same music on the other.

Other nice videos are Beyond The Beginning and The Manticore Special.

Copy and pasted the track list from the above link. Its the Lyceum gig (minus The Barbarian) + The Belgian gig (minus The Barbarian) , both having been released as seperate DVD's previously. HOWEVER The Barbarian is missing from both track lists which is really odd. Why exclude both live versions??!

Thanks Richard! That might be it! I've looked a bit further into it, and I seem to be reading a lot about obtrusive visual production and graphics on it, does that sound right?!

I've never actually seen any proper footage of ELP in their vintage prime, so I was very interested!
yep pretty much (but see post above). Apparently the obtrusive visuals effects were burnt into the flim and cannot be removedOuch Also the one track that doesn't have them is The Barbarian and that seems to have been left off this particular DVD releaseConfused
BTW if you like ELP - Pictures At An Exhibition the deluxe edition (3 CD set) has The Lyceum version , The Newcastle City Hall version and The Isle Of Wight version all beautifully restored to the most prestine audio quality possible. The Lyceum concert is in fact in its entirety and there are extra tracks from the Isle Of Wight performance. Its the best ''deluxe edition' of any album that I've come across.Approve

Possibly so that in a couple of years they can release a new version with The Barbarian and sell again, bloody commercial attitude Confused
And maybe some day without the pscychedelic visual effects... possibly I would buy that one even if I would hate them.

Evidently, something that is currently in the works is a DVD of the famous ELP performance at the Mar Y Sol Festival in Puerto Rico in 1972. I have a CD of that concert and it is totally awesome! I would kill to have a DVD of the same.

I have this one. I find the animation really annoying, but i live for the un-animated parts, like the first 15 minutes of PAAE performance, and small bits later on. I also really like the Belgium footage.

Thanks for all your help, guys! Stacks for me to look into now!

Hey Sympathy Orchestra, I was so surprised by the E.L.Powell album, I really thought it was going to be awful. I picked it up dirt cheap for a few dollars, and it remained unlistened to for quite a while! When I finally got around to it, I was shocked that it was as high quality as it was! You're very lucky to have got to see them back then! Being a (relatively!) younger prog fan (well, not that young, I'm a few years off 40 now), I haven't had much of a chance to witness the classic prog bands live. Being based in Australia, even more so!

I'm thinking of checking out ELP and I want to start with their debut, obviously.  But do I get the new 3 disc SW 5.1 remaster or just pick up one of the other versions?

The new SW remasters are good from what I hear.

Anyways, I might get a little hate for this, but I really think that Trilogy was a better album than Tarkus. I don't know why, but Trilogy has a really polished feel to it. Don't get me wrong, Tarkus is excellent. Trilogy, however, isn't really a bunch of Emersonian noodling that was heavily featured on Tarkus. It's got a fairly nice balance between all three band members, seeing Palmer's drum work on The Sheriff and Lake's excellent From The Beginning. Also, the Endless Enigma suite and the title track are two of my all-time favorite prog-rock tracks.
I consider drone metal to be progressive...

MillsLayne! You couldn't pick a better place to start than the debut! It's the first one I heard from the band, and it's still not only my favourite from them, but also one of my favourite prog albums from the vintage 70's era. All killer, no filler....and certainly none of the goofball `comedy' tracks that show up on the later albums - although a lot of fans don't seem to mind those tracks!

But if you're not sure about them, perhaps pick up one of the existing remastered CD copies that are quite cheap these days just in case? I think those fancy new 3CD sets are really for die-hard fans already very familiar with the album and band.

Perhaps check on Youtube for some clips of the studio tracks from the debut, and see what you think?

I never realised that was filmed! As you say would be awesome to have a DVD release as the performance is as good anything ELP did live.

The Belgian footage is excellent and for anyone who remembers it was originally shown in the UK on TV as part of The Beat Club series.

If I wasn't in love with the 'future gone mad' dsytopian sci fi landscape of BSS then I would agree. Trilogy was a proper ensemble album. Lake's contribution is very important especially as it features his best lyrics and best singing (IMO). Carl Palmer nails everything while Emerson shifts beautifully between mini moogs , piano and organ without ever losing sight of the needs of the music. It all comes across as more tastefull and artistic compared to other ELP albums except maybe the debut. However BSS is the most popular with the fans. ELP being ELP multiplied by a 100CoolClap

I am sorry, Richard, and to the rest of you, but i don't have my facts straight. I did some recent research on the net, and i had previously misinterpreted something i read on the ELP Wikipedia page. There is no planned DVD of the ELP Mar y Sol Concert.
