He should be kept locked away for the rest of his life and any money made from books or movies etc should be given to the victims families.

I have no problem with treating people humanely. I do have a problem with forcing victims families to pay for his imprisonment and trial while receiving no reparations.

I don't really believe in "prisoners' rights," at least not for violent crimes. In my view, once you consciously choose to claim another life, you forfeit all expectations of being treated with the dignity or respect of a normal human being. |

I don't think that we should let murderers turn us into animals by the way that the law requires us to treat them.

I think he should be executed, unless he's declared insane. I'm not a proponent of capital punishment in all cases of murder, but I think there are some crimes that are so disgusting that the criminal needs to be done away with for good.

Well, in 10 seconds they could save the Norwegians taxpayers millions. Instead they'll spend the money to care for him for decades. Whatever.

Not news of the day but news of the weird.
Ironies -- A three-truck crash on Interstate 40 in Albuquerque, N.M., in May destroyed one truck and sent two people to the hospital with minor injuries. One tractor-trailer carrying a load of charcoal and charcoal lighter fluid crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer carrying frozen meat. The lighter fluid facilitated a huge fireball/barbecue. [Albuquerque Journal, 5-17-2012] Also Science On The Cutting Edge -- Dung beetles are known to researchers to roll perfectly made balls with their back legs and to periodically mount the balls, pirouette and climb down to be on their way. Emily Baird of Lund University in Sweden explained why in a January issue of the journal PLoS One: The beetles are gathering celestial readings to help shepherd their balls home, away from predators. Baird's specialty is learning how animals with tiny brains perform complex tasks, and to test the dung beetle, she patiently watched 22 of them guide their balls through an obstacle course her team created. Doesn't matter- The guy was ruled sane. He serves 3.27 months for each victim. I still don't understand why his sentence would not be 21 years per murder. The Norwegian mindset on this is (to me) baffling: "He is getting what he deserves," said Alexandra Peltre, 18, whom Breivik shot in the thigh on Utoeya. "This is karma striking back at him. I do not care if he is insane or not, as long as he gets the punishment that he deserves." "I am pleased, although that's not really the right word, and relieved. This is what we hoped for," said Mette Yvonne Larsen, who represented some of those affected in court. "I have already received many messages from clients telling me this is justice served and they are happy it's over and will never have to see him again." And this is what troubles me most: Some Norwegians now believe their country must draw on the experience to debate issues like immigration as their oil wealth attracts large numbers of foreign workers. These are being discussed more openly after the killings by Breivik, who believed the government's immigration policies were adulterating "Norwegian blood" and leading to war with Muslims. Congratulations Breivik. You have won. ![]() |

Don’t worry, after 21 years they will sentence him to five more years and so on until his death, so he will be imprisoned for life.

On what grounds? You can't just arbitrarily extend a sentence beyond what a judge rules without some further infraction. What would lead you to this conclusion? |

US law and Norwegian law are quite different. I quote from The Guardian:
Breivik is almost certain to end his life in prison. Although Norway has a maximum prison sentence of 21 years, Breivik could be sentenced to "preventive detention", which can be extended for as long as an inmate is considered dangerous to society. From what I understand he actually has been sentenced to preventive detention ("forvaring" in Norwegian). If he ever gets out again – which I find very unlikely – he will be an old man. |

Two dead, nine wounded in shooting near Empire State Building.
And to think I sat in on a meeting at work the other day about workplace violence. |
