I might have agreed on Hackett -- he has the some high highs and his lows aren't too bad.....usually. Unfortunately he had to go and make "Genesis Revisited", which was absolute crap. Sorry Steve.

I would say Pink Floyd, but I don't like Ummagumma at all (except for Grandchester Meadows).
For now, I would say King Crimson. I love everything they made (even 80s stuff - Discipline, Beat, TOAPP).
VdGG is coming close, but I haven't heard much of them, so it will have to wait.
Also, my apparent dislike for 80s and forward Rush doesn't stop me from saying that they haven't done a bad album. Some are not really excellent, but nothing disappointing.

Tool possibly is one of the only bands that I enjoy all music from (they don't have the biggest discography though ![Tongue Tongue](smileys/smiley17.gif) ). |
Odd, I'm in love with the DB and I'm not sure if I could call Tool prog at heart, but I agree that out of every direction they've taken, they've never taken a blatantly wrong step.

The Police. Luckily they disbanded before Sting grew into that douchey AAA-format middle aged cheese puff whose sole mission in life became to moisten the panties of suburban house fraus.

Jean-Luc Ponty, Neuschwanstein, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Return To Forever, maybe Steely Dan. That's really it. No bad albums. I guess I can add 10cc.

Well for me, Gentle Giant..
I consider Gentle Giant as one of the most original bands ever with a very distinctive sound. The musicianship is great and a lot of variety of instrumentation, each album mantains that characteristic sound result of a fusion of musical styles and different types of instruments. I consider their work as essential.
Gentle Giant never lets me down ![Tongue Tongue](smileys/smiley17.gif)

No Prog bands I can think of, as even the ones that I am I die hard fan off have generally done at least one crap track. So I'm going to have to say The Beatles. I would include Classical composers like Bach or Elgar, but since we're talking bands, then I'll leave them & just go for the popular music canon.

Tall order - bands that can do no wrong. Fun reading through the various tastes here. Several bands such as Yes, Tull, Floyd, Genesis, Zappa only had eras where I thought they could do no wrong. Transatlantic comes close. The Dixie Dregs is one. No disappointments. Even the vocal experiments on Industry Standard have some Morse brilliance in them. Wish they put out some more stuff. Maybe with Jordan Rudess on keys now that T is gone.

Missed this the 1st time through. Those not familiar with this band are advised to check them out. A lot of different styles of music written and played exceptionally well.

I would say there is no one band that has never disappointed me--but Gentle Giant comes pretty close to doing so.

At last! And I think that all the top ranked successors think the same. They were all inspired by The Beatles, more or less.
