Socrates was pretty good, but it's hard to know what he thought or what Plato was projecting onto him.
Also, goddamn Mitt Romney is hilarious. There is just a neverending stream of lies coming out of his face and he doesn't care.

Does it matter? Whether the words be Socrates' or Plato's makes no difference.

Not really. It is kind of funny that most (all?) of Plato's dialogues with So-crates happen in a few days of each other. "Naw, man it's fine. Let's talk about the best society possible for like 6 hours while I'm on my way to my trial."

There's probably a fair amount of parable considering the only 3 sources we have for his life.

Liberals Discover Their Inner Dick Cheney
At first I thought, based on the headline, that it'd be about them (*cough slarti*) continuing to turn their head to Bamers' Cheneylike foreign policy.

Sure. Because not allowing people to walk around armed to the freaking teeth is exactly like torturing them. That's right up there with Obamacare being compared with the holocaust. As if telling people to get insurance is the same as slaughtering six million Jews. It's all about degrees folks.

I thought the article made a good point : "Sixty million Americans own firearms, and almost none of them ever will fire a shot in anger. The premise behind gun control, then, is that millions of law-abiding Americans should have their rights and liberties circumscribed in order to prevent a minuscule fraction—something like three one-hundredths of 1 percent of them—from abusing those rights." It is trouble that America seems to have a serious violence problem, but restricting guns ownership is unlikely to solve it. I would suspect widespread violence in media would be a culprit, but I'm loathe to suggest involuntary censorship. I do think a serious problem a lot of Libertarians have is thinking 100% freedom, 100% of the time is the best possible option, and that anything else is fascism.

I don't think violence in the media is the reason that America has higher incidents of gun crime than other countries, nor do I think it's about availability. I suspect it's more of an underlying cultural thing.

America has more diversity than any place on the planet. Is diversity here a good thing? I don't know.
Is it the reason we have lots of violence? Guns aren't the reason. Healthcare isn't the reason. The economy is not the reason. The UK is okay with no guns because the UK is not like us. Chicago and DC banned hand guns for a while. Look at their crime stats. |

I actually agree with you that it is a cultural thing, but I'm sure in a different way. I'm not saying there should necessarily be gun control, just that I think it is silly to compare gun control to torture. Anyway, I believe that it is our so-called "rugged" individualistic culture, our focus on monetary success and an every man/woman/child for him/herself culture that leads to the levels of violence that we see here in the states. We were founded on a wild west attitude. We started to come out of it, but now that we've been moving back to it over the last 30 some years, it's not a surprise that the level of violence is escalating. It will continue to escalate until we decide to become a civilized society, if we last that long. |

I also disagree. To claim America was founded on a Wild West attitude is ridiculous and untrue. Actually America was founded on a Puritan attitude.

Now wait a minute. This is interesting. Maybe you're not a full-blown libertarian, I don't know exactly where you stand anymore. I've lost touch. But is it really libertarianism to denounce diversity? Are you saying, we should all be free as long as we all act and believe exactly the same? Gee, that doesn't sound like freedom to me. |
