Try telling your employer "sorry I totally failed to perform this month but if you do a performance curve of all employees you'll see how my performance is actually quite good!"

I've had administrators require me to accept essays after the term is over or let students make up work (one student in particular got suspended for hanging his bare ass out of a bus window and he went crying to an administrator, expecting to make up everything he missed). Students don't fail often because they are pushed along through the system. Logistically, a high school can't have 25% of the student population repeating required classes. So standards get lowered. That's why I have eleventh graders who can't tell time, can not read the word "author," and honestly think they can get away with copy and pasting an essay from the Internet. |

I think we have actually achieve a rare moment of consensus here - it is a frivolous lawsuit.

It wasn't a month in the student's case, it was a day. I'm not siding with the lawsuit but it is emotionally distressful to try to get straight A's. |

It's emotionally distressful to try to get straight A's because getting straight A's means you are an exceptional student. It's emotionally distressful to compete in the Olympics too, but that doesn't mean we should lower the standards in order to make people feel better about themselves.

Like I said, I don't agree with lowering the standards. I was aiming my comment at those who were amazed that he was emotionally distressed. |

Aww come on, hanging your ass out of a bus window is totally an excusable absence. I went through US public schools in Virginia and Georgia. I wasn't pushed through the system. As I recall students who needed it extra help got it. Schooling at its best. I think the proper spelling of the word is arthur. What the heck is the matter with you? It does sadden me that solution for whatever is wrong with our schools is to give vouchers to put more money into the pockets of parents with resources while leaving the public schools and children of poorer students to rot. I went through public school too. I had some good teachers and some bad teachers, but frankly I feel like most of my time was wasted. I learn more through my own research anyway. Our public schools are inefficient as educational institutions because they are set up as a child care service (can you really retain the information you are exposed to from 8am to 4pm five days a week?). Hell, even universities only require 12 hours of classroom time a week. |

I wouldn't talk of universities as having that higher of an educational standard here sadly...

Not talking about standards- just that we set up our school systems' schedule to coincide with a typical 9-5 40 hour work week, which is extremely inefficient for learning. |

That's a shame but then we are nearly two decades apart in age. My favorite part of my public school education was the library where of course you had the opportunity for self education. Edited by Slartibartfast - July 27 2012 at 15:07 |

I'm just saying I would have rather been homeschooled (which is what we are doing for our children). Most of what I know has come from personal experience or research. I've gone through 9th grade civics, but I probably only remember five things from it. But if I needed to know about a Supreme Court case because I was, I don't know, arguing on an Internet forum, I know how to research the information. Damn, we even have a game show hosted by a Georgian that emphasizes the fact that people just don't remember what they learned in school. |

You have the resources in this day and age to accomplish that. And from chatting with you I have no doubt you'll do a good job. If I had kids, I'd be able to as well if it weren't for having to hold down a regular job. I'm not sure I'd rather do that than have a quality public school system. |

If you take away from schools the chance of making the only real difference they may be able to in a person's life (building a sense of responsibility and structure, adapting him to meet deadlines and fulfill responsibilities, learn how to deal with pressure and work in team, etc) then they become absolutely useless. Nobody remembers sh*t of what was taught when one was 10 year old.
Now of course this responsibility-teaching goal should start at home anyway. |
