A bit utopian, but I like the idea of not fighting over anything. I hate possibilities of friction.

^ reviews without ratings is the better alternative. Ratings are one the main thing that makes me reluctant to review.

Agree, its allways hard to find the right rating. But as a user, its a guideline of where to start with a band you want to dig into, would be a lot of work having to read all the reviews. How i start with the album with the best rating, read 2-3 high rating reviews, and a few lower rating reviews. Then I often get a good picture why people think this is one af the bands better albums.

Was trolling - as I said before, I think rating should reflect the text in the guidelines. It dosent say dont give 1 star ratings, it says use 1 and 5 stars carefully. |

I tend to use 1 star ratings in three circumstances:
- Where I consider an album to be a scam of some kind (for example, the VdGG "The Masters" compilation which consists partly of tracks from Time Vaults, partly Jackson/Banton/Evans tracks which were never actually VdGG songs). - Where the album production or performance is so inept as to render enjoyment impossible. (Rarest of them all, can't actually think of any cases off the top of my head.) - Where the very idea behind the album is so poor as to spoil it, and the participants really should have known that. (See: VdGG's ALT.) - Where my personal reaction to the album is so extremely negative that rating it any higher would feel like a dishonest representation of my feelings about the subject. (ELP's Brain Salad Surgery is an example of this for me - I find it so aesthetically objectionable that I just can't bring myself to give it a single extra star.) Some of these are very subjective, of course, but I think pretending to be an objective reviewer is an exercise in fooling yourself: in my view your biases are always going to come out, so it's best to be honest and upfront about them and trust that the overall mass of reviews and ratings will in the long run correct any outliers.

That's four!
I absolutely agree with you here. Well said. There is no such thing as an objective review. Edited by Epignosis - July 25 2012 at 22:25 |

^ Didn't you guys discuss this before? Yes, on the very same thread not too long ago. If you present facts in your review, than you are being objective. You bring in some piece of your mind about the album as well, than it's part-objective, part-subjective.
I don't know a review that can be completely objective because the whole point of it is for the reviewer to share his/her feelings about the album.

^ And in terms of ratings at least (which is where the discussion's focused currently), there's no objectivity possible. There's no star-detector we can wave over an album which will beep and tell us scientifically how awesome it is. The rating you ascribe to an album is a section of the review which is more or less entirely devoid of facts because it provides absolutely no objectively verifiable information about the material to hand.
I agree that you can't have a 100% objective review because that would be a recitation of facts about an album which drew no conclusions and made no comment on how effective it actually is, which is more of an encyclopaedia entry than a review. I'd actually go further though and say that it's the subjective part of a review which is actually interesting to readers. Someone who wants a review wants to see someone make a subjective judgement call on the merits of an album; if you just wanted the objective facts you wouldn't look up a review, you'd go to a reference page like discogs.com or Wikipedia or the non-review parts of our database entries.

Is there a difference between "I don't like this album" and "This album is abysmally bad"?

^ Probably. All I know is that anyone who admits to giving Brain Salad Surgery 1 star is someone I will never read or take notice of his reviews ever again. And his opinion will also mean zero to me personally.

Yes, one is a subjective judgement, and the other is an objective judgement (or at least an attempt at one). |

In the former case you can grudgingly admit that there's probably stuff about the album other people like; in the latter case you are expressing bewilderment as to how anyone could like it. It looks like an objective statement but nobody should mistake it for one and everyone would get along a lot smoother if people learned to take such hyperbole in the right spirit.
