Badass intensity.  Emotions, mostly.  Think the opening trumpet solo in Mahler 5 when them horses start charging.

Depends on the prog song.  There's a select few that frequently give me the chills, as well as some others that may give me that feeling depending on my mood/state of mind/place in life at the moment/etc.

All of these songs have given me that feeling at some point:

2112 - Rush
The Pass - Rush
Hemispheres - Rush
Distant Early Warning - Rush
And You and I - Yes
In the Presence Of - Yes
When I Survey - Iona
The Island - Iona
Luciforms - The Mars Volta
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - Dream Theater
Far From Heaven - Dream Theater
The Spirit Carries On - Dream Theater
Beneath the Surface - Dream Theater
The Count of Tuscany  - Dream Theater
A Nightmare to Remember - Dream Theater (wow, a lot of DT)
Laboratories of the Invisible World (Rollerskating the Cosmic Palmistric Postborder) - maudlin of the Well
Another Excerpt: Keep Light Near You, Even When Dying - maudlin of the Well
Ashes are Burning - Renaissance

and the big one: Supper's Ready - Genesis

As far as non-prog goes, I sometimes get this feeling when listening to:

Alone - At Sea
Fix You - Coldplay
1812 Overture - Tchikovsky
Messiah - Handel
Wachet Auf - Bach
Gloria - Vivaldi
And countless hymns that I've sung in church.
I love dogs, I've always loved dogs

While tingling and crying are very rare for me, I scream, take my shirt off and roll all over the floor screaming all kinds of things when listening to Starless and Shine on You Crazy Diamond, almost always.

That perception is not an illusion, it's a real effect and it has a perfectly logical explanation.

Back to topic I agree with Slarti, I've had that feeling but less and less as I have grown older.

1812, really?  It's never done much for me.  I've probably been desensitized, though.  I play that way too often.

I find it to be one of the most glorious pieces of music ever written.

Don't know much classical music nor Tchaikovski, but if there is a Tchaikovski piece that gives me goosebums, that's Swan Lake.

Stagnation by Genesis is just sublime. The last batch of melodies in that song are so beautiful; gives me goosebumps every single time. The songs dynamic make it one of my favourite Genesis songs, and not to mention Tony's keyboard solo - gets my blood pumping and puts a huge smile on my face. Big smile

Also, absolutely everything Sigur Ros has ever created. If mother nature had a voice, it'd be Sigur Ros.

This thread is all about what the chemical dopamine can do and reward-driven learning innit? Why does the stimulus have to be Prog though?

Nobody said it has to be prog, just that prog can be one.
