Went with Rope, my favorite Hitchcock film. I could have made a list of 25 for the thirties alone, and ditto for the forties.
A few of my favs: White Heat Double Indemnity Laura They Drive By Night The Petrified Forest Sullivan's Travels The Roaring Twenties Angels With Dirty Faces The Stranger The Set Up |

Casablanca it's always been fascinating to me that they made up significant parts of the film as they went, and it turned out coherent and is now a classic

Voted for Un Chien Andalou. I wouldn't have minded seeing L'Atalante, Sunrire, Vampyr and Körkarlen on the list.

Strange that you have Frankenstein but not the superior Bride Of Frankenstein.

I have seen many of these, some more than 5 times.
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens, a masterpiece, the best of the list, one of my top movies of all time and probably my favorite Dracula movie ever (with Dracula 1958 and Coppola's one - I've seen them all really). Battleship Potemkin - quite impressive movie, I saw it only once but since I own it you've made me decide to watch it again. The power of the images conceived by Eisenstein is imposing. City Lights - another masterpiece. If one doesn't feel something inside with the last scene, one's not human. The best display of the biggest movie genius ever. The best in the list but my love for the Count forced my vote... ![]() Dracula 1931 - important movie, I've seen it million times. Lugosi is really terrible but his weird performance somewhat works. Too theatrical and static, time has not been kind with this legendary overrated portrayal of the Count. Frankenstein - what a difference a few months and another director make. Not quite as brilliant as 1935's Bride of Frankenstein, but a fantastic movie nevertheless, with one of the most legendary make-ups in movie history and Karloff's literally towering portrayal of the creature. King Kong - better than all the remakes. Feels newer than all of them. Enough said. Wizard of Oz - somewhat disappointing for me. It has its magic. Modern times - not in the league of Gold Rush or City Lights but still way above what anybody else could ever make. Gone with the Wind - I love this movie. I have sit through its 4 hours more than 4 times, never bored. Fantasia - classical music and Mickey. Enough said. Magic. Citizen Kane - first time I saw it I didn't love it. Second time I started to grasp its mastery. Oh Rosebud, next time you'll be mine. Casablanca - slightly overrated for me but it has Humphrey Bogart. Enough said. Nosferatu was the first silent film I ever saw and still one of my favorites (although the Thief of Baghdad with Douglas Fairbanks is jaw-droppingly great.) I too am a fan of Coppola's Dracula and am pleased to see that I am not the only one (as it often seems I am.) |

Having said that, it's not much saying that I like Coppola's Dracula. I even enjoy Al Adamson's Dracula vs Frankenstein so it doesn't take much to make me enjoy a Count movie ![]() |

Did you see Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) with Kenneth Branagh, Helena Bonham Carter and Robert De Niro? It didn't get much attention, but I quite liked it. There is also a great Myst-like computer game called Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Monster thatt stars Tim Curry as Dr. Frankenstein. It scared the hell out of me as a kid.

The latter one I haven't seen. The former one of course. I also like it even if Branagh's camera is totally schizophrenic in that movie. Also, it has a lot of holes but still, is a good Frankenstein movie, though not above Whale's 31 and 35 ones or Fisher's movies starring Peter Cushing for Hammer.

Has any of you seen E. Elias Merhige´s (also director of Begotten, that was in my 90's list) Shadow Of The Vampire? It's about Nosferatu's filming process, and how everyone on the crew starts having serious doubts whether Max Schreck (the actor that played Nosferatu, interpreted by Willem Dafoe), is in fact a true vampire.
A pretty interesting movie. Willem Dafoe's characterization is stunning

^Of course I have seen it a couple of times (is in my collection too). Dafoe's acting is superb, and the story is uttey original. I love how it pays homage to Murnau's masterpiece and Murnau himself.

I voted Un Chien Andalou because I love it, but it's a short, not a feature.
From the other silents I would say The General followed by Nosferatu - I've seen Metropolis and wasn't that impressed and I know I should see Battleship Potemkin sometime but I haven't yet.
From the 30s Duck Soup is great - then I love all Marx Brothers films equally.
Casablanca from the 40s.
