Most media is controlled by a group of people who want us as divided and uninformed as possible. 90% of reporters are not good reporters... and probably even the good reporters are controlled to a certain degree. I don't trust any 1 single news organization... so to stay informed you have to look at every single news site and see where discrepancies lie.

I do not think the media is controlled by the "left" specifically. It's much worse than that.

I suggest you Dean to come to the US and watch American tv. From the Uk you probably can't. CNN, Nbc, Cbs, Abc, and minor stations always lean left. FoxNews is the only one that leans right. Also, printed media like the Ny Times or Washington Post.

I lso suggest re-reading my post and looking at the word "most" which clearly will tell you I didn't mean "all".

Here in American TV news are never news. I agree with Smurph.

So there is still some hope for the USA. Wink

NPR

New York or Washington Times when I stumble across them at Starbucks.

But really, just NPR, sometimes misc. Reddit links cross checked against my bullsh*t detector.

Network news? As I recall David Lynch saying once about watching videos on an iPhone: "Get f**king real".

As expected.  If someone could make the case how these laws would actually get the guns away from criminals and prevent them from buying illegally, please explain.  How does it make us safer to remove guns from people who would comply with the new laws, while the bad guys roar uproariously with laughter.  Educate me.

What you are saying here has frustrated legitimate, responsible gun owners for years.
Criminals don't care about new gun laws because the job description of their chosen profession is to break the law. In fact, criminals like gun control laws because it makes their job easier by making their victims more vulnerable.
Gun haters don't like it but tens of  thousands of crimes are prevented every year because the intended victim was armed.
Every state that has adapted a CCW law has had a notable drop in crimes commited. At the same time, states with stricter gun laws have higher rates of crime.

But, none of this matters when it comes to the theater shooting.
The shooter was a mentally disturbed individual and nothing can stop people like him.
You don't know who they are or what they are going to do until it's too late.
Born that way? A victim of society?
It doesn't matter, the results were the same.

Interestingly enough homicides/murders in this country have gone to a 30year low and we don't carry guns. Of course USA is very different as you are starting from a position where people own guns already.

As far as preventing this one happening (or not being able to for one reason or another) I do wonder if this is the case, looking at the amount of preparations he made and all by legal methods, alarms must have been ringing (although silently) all over the place. Criminals, wouldn't leave any trail like this because they wouldn't go to the Supermarket to buy their guns.
But nobody seems to be addressing this, just throwing their arms in the air and saying 'what could we do? He is obviously mmad?'
Help me I'm falling!

Richard O'Dwyer extradition opposed by vast majority in UK

...the implications of this case are far reaching and could affect this site. The reasons why the extradition is being sort by the USA is that all .com and .net traffic passes through the USA, so even a site that is hosted in another country (in O'Dwyer's instance the UK, for PA it is Canada) and hosted no actual copyrighted material, its owner can be extradited for trial in the USA over links to copyrighted material on his .net domained web site.

Actually criminals love our lack of gun control laws because they can get their hands on all kinds of weapons.

Exactly!  Just like drug dealers like our lack of drug laws because they can get their hands on all kinds of drugs!

Oh wait.

Happiness is a warm gun. Even better if you are also hopped up on drugs.

The NRA opposes even the most reasonable restrictions on gun ownership.  I think people should be allowed guns for hunting and self defense.  And the second amendment is about a well regulated militia.

Quote
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.

The independent clause of this sentence is "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."  Syntactically, that is the main idea of amendment.

Great article on the grammar and syntax of the Second Amendment.

Quote
Approaching the sentence as grammarians, we immediately note two things: the simple subject is "right" and the full predicate is "shall not be infringed." This, in other words, is a sentence about a right that is already assumed to exist. It does not say, "The people shall have a right to keep and bear arms." The amendment recognizes , but does not grant, the right. As the U.S. Supreme Court wrote in the late 19th century, the right to keep and bear arms is independent of the Constitution.

And note that "well regulated" does not mean "have rules imposed by state or federal governments:"

Quote
"Well regulated," Alexander Hamilton wrote in the Federalist Papers , meant well drilled and disciplined.

It is not independent it is entirely dependent.  When you single out "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." you are taking things out of context. It's bullcrap like that which have stymied sensible gun control laws. Thumbs Down

But if you want to go back to original intent, the weapons of the day were muskets.  Bloodletting was healthcare, we have the right to own slaves but for voting purposes they are only 3/5'ths of a person...

What?  Confused

It's the syntax of the sentence, Slart.  You cannot escape it.  An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone.  It is the main idea of the sentence.  Consider this example:

"Because she wanted to make a quiche, Susan bought a dozen eggs."

There are two clauses here.  One is the dependent clause, and one is the independent clause (or main idea).  "Because she wanted to make a quiche" is not a complete sentence.  It is the dependent clause.  "Susan bought a dozen eggs" is a complete sentence.  It is the independent clause.

Hence, the clause "
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State" is dependent.  It is not a complete sentence and therefore not the main idea of the sentence.

"The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" is a complete sentence, and is therefore the independent clause.
