I'm having a hard time seeing what that topic has to do with American Literature. It is a good question however. |

I guess writing on a subject, whatever it is, will help students even better than knowing how many novels Mark Twain wrote. If students were made to think more and memorize less...
But yes then they should be reading some books mr Brown |

Really? The Declaration of Independence and The US Constitution are examples of American literature, surely.
By my estimation, we read over fifty pieces of literature in a semester. |

And then they'll run an expose trying to get to the bottom of why people who watch the news are cynical and disaffected. There's gotta be a mirror for you to look into somewhere stage left you vain anchors...

Well pardon me. I think of literature as being fiction or poetry. So a technical manual or an encyclopedia would also qualify? |

America doesn't have much of that. That's a joke but every aspect of American culture in writing is literature. |

Look, I literally read encyclopedias when I was young. I just don't consider those two documents as being appropriate for an American Lit class. More the province of civics.

English classes need to learn all types of writing in class, the would read poetry, fiction, non-fiction, technical, etc. Political documents are a necessity to learn how to read effectively.

If you read a political document like a work of fiction (which many probably do, no doubt) or world would be extremely flawed. |

I look forward to the essays you get when you ask your students to write an essay on the AIA's Architectural Graphic Standards. Edited by Slartibartfast - July 20 2012 at 19:19 |
