Whose Life is it Anyway?

Dated if reasonable adaption of the play with Richard Dreyfuss as a sculptor who becomes quadriplegic after a traffic accident.   Dim and depressing, Dreyfuss is at his intense and annoying best and a better, modern version of this script could be made.   Though I doubt it.

The Woman in Black

Creepy very English horror movie, even when you know where the scares are it still makes you jump. Epic tension building and a decent ending.

Million Dollar Baby

Rocky with a girl? Well not quite, but it follows the story of a female boxer who is given her "shot". Things take a rather unexpected but welcome turn, and the film delves into a very emotional and heart wrenching conclusion.

Picked up "Get The Gringo" yesterday and watched it last night. I don't like to judge a movie after only one viewing but in this case,  the second viewing could actually be worse. There could still be a few bad spots that I missed last night.
Gibson is a gangster who steals a lot of money from a bigger gangster and drives to Mexico then gets caught and put in a corrupt Mexican prison that allows inmates to have their wives, kids, girlfriends if they pay the corrupt warden. So you have a small Mexican village inside a large prison.
It was written and produced by Gibson but directed by someone else so at least Mel has that going for him.

Amazing Spider Man
The Amazing Spider-Man Poster

3 stars

A much better acting performance by the main characters especially Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy who is wonderful and believable as the girl who discovers her boyfriend has super abilities. Her performance is understated and not as schmaltzy as Kirsten Dunst. Also gone is the corny phrases and expressions of Toby Maguire who really gets on my nerves in the original trilogy. Andrew Garfield is more likeable and has endearing qualities. It all play out a bit like a Twilight movie and that is also not welcome in my opinion but overall the whole premise is engaging. The villain being the Lizard is played well by Rhys Ifans and we get to know him well first in his human form making the transition to monster more tragic. He is quite likeable as the professor and it was great to see the comic character come to life finally. The film does have some great scenes such as Spiderman Vs the thugs in the subway tube, Spidey Vs Lizard sequence and where he discovers his powers and escapes a bunch of muggers. I was frustrated that the whole story had to be retold rather than just moving on from the last movie. It takes half the movie to get to the action, though Emma Stone is still incredible in these early scenes.

Also the web comes out of a contraption rather than Spideys own wrists and that is just irreverant from the comics scenario. It was terrific to see Stan Lee in the library with ear plugs oblivious of Lizard and Spidey duking it out in the background, one of Lees best cameos ever. However the film bogs down and gets dull in many parts and should have been trimmed. It is marginally better, thanks to the 3D, and acting of main characters, than the first Sam Raimi Spiderman movie but should have been much better. I look forward to the sequel and hopefully Carnage will make an appearance.

Air Doll - 2009

2 and 1/2 stars

This odd haunting Japanese film gripped me from start to finish but was actually very long at 2 hours in length. It plays out like a Twilight Zone episode but pads out with slow scenes, painful dialogue and shoegaze acting and patient camera work. The acting is all up to main protagonist Bae Doona who is an inflatable doll that comes to life. The first scene shows the perverse lonely owner having a conversation at the dinner table with the doll he calls Nozomi, and then takes her to bed. It is uncomfortable viewing as the doll really looks lifeless and made of plastic with staring eyes and frozen expression. When the doll moves after the man has finished with her the next morning, it is chilling. The doll turns to real life Doona and she looks like something from an Anime film. She is beautiful, inquisitive, and hopelessly lost. In secret she ventures outside and in wonderment walks around the city experiencing new sensations; the smells, the textures and conversations are all fascinating through her eyes. The camera follows her into a DVD store where she actually gets a job as an assistant. There she meets a fellow assistant and they fall in love. He finds out she is a doll when she snags herself and air leaves her body. In an eroticised scene the assistant blows through her plug/ navel and breathes air into her body. Later this act would backfire and turn both their worlds to darkness.

I do not wish to give away anymore but the film does descend into some very dark territory that surprised me as the opening half is actually quite poetically beautiful. The cinematography is sumptuous and lovingly focuses on the doll's expressions and bewilderment. The story is a take on the Pinnochio theme, Nozomi even meets her creator in a Blade Runner like scene, because the doll wants "more life", to be a real girl and discover real emotions. It is sad when we see her staring at all the plastic bodies realising she is only another toy for someone else pleasure. The film is a fractured fairy tale but it is definitely designed for adults. One specific scene is quite disturbing with visceral imagery that has stayed with me for a while. Also the movie has an air of hope but is nevertheless infused with a depressing worldview; that the world can offer nothing but hopelessness unless you are willing to succumb to the system and integrate into the life that has been mapped out for us. There is an existential theme and the cycle of life and death are explored in powerful thought provoking scenes. The theme of discarding burnable garbage is prevalent, as is the theme of finding a heart that causes us to lie and feel pain. The film is overall melancholy, depicting soulless citylife and the emptiness of loneliness for those who are different. Nozomi is just as lonely as her owner and it is a sad state of affairs when she finds herself replaced so easily, almost like a divorced woman seeing her husband with another woman. The film may make a statement of empty relationships and disposable love, like burnable garbage.

The movie causes us to question the big questions of existence, our purpose, what is life and the human condition. The ending is poignant and quite moving with some misce-en-scene of surreal imagery that may be interpreted in a number of ways. It is not family viewing and Doona spends quite some time of the film in her birthday suit, but it is never overdone and her sexual encounters are as empty as a prostitute's. There are some powerful scenes that show Nozomi awakening to humanity but the understated performance of Doona is the real drawcard to this oddity; she is elegant beauty. A one of a kind film, better perhaps than other doll obsession movies such as 'Lifesize', 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'Lars and the Real Girl'. Well worth watching as a curio, and a thought provoking conversation piece, but take caution due to the nudity, visceral imagery and psychological unsettling nature of the film.

It's Kind of a Funny Story. Comedy, Drama.

Starring: Zach Galifianakis, Keir Gilchrist, and the hot Emma Roberts.

Now, I know what you are thinking. Yes, this is the Galifianakis of the "Hangover"-movie-series-and-other-dumba$%-comedies fame, but here he actually commits himself to a pretty serious role.

The movie was OK. It actually underpays as a comedy while demonstrating an emphasis on the storytelling, albeit the story is very simple.

The story is about a dude who thinks he is suicide-inclined and stupidly checks himself into a mental hospital. There he meets this really decent guy, who is in a search of a shelter he will reside in after he checks out, and a hot blonde, who happens to be a pretty good drawer.

I found the life lessons in the film cheap (or simply free), so chances are you have nothing to learn from it. Was the movie a waste of time? I'm not sure, to be honest.

The Dark Knight Rises

Overall a very satisfying ending to Nolan's trilogy. There are a few somewhat minor plot element that try to hit an emotional chord but end up being a little too convenient to feel authentic, and I vaguely wish there would not have been the clean fusion device and "Bat" just to keep it somewhat grounded (if it can be). Just like how the convenient Bat sonar thing in The Dark Knight allowed Batman to be omniscient. It's weird saying this but I'd rather they kept the sci fi out of this. It's a superhero movie so realism is right out, but Nolan's trilogy is it's best and most effective when it is grounded in "this isn't completely impossible" land. Overall, this all together would be enopugh to dock it maybe a 1/2 star out of 4, maybe a star at most. Also, the score is serviceable, except for the main motif which excels, but overall it's not quite as good as The Dark Night's score.

What should be said is that it is a blockbuster that delivers in thrills, chills, back story, character development, and possibly the most satisfying finale for a superhero movie to date. There is no stand out performance like Ledger's Joker, but the ensemble (and it is a true ensemble) deliver's more than enough to cover the ground. And Bane is a brilliant villain.

3.5/4

For reference:

Batman Begins: 2.5/4
The Dark Knight: 3.5/4

127 Hours.

Wow. I've got quite a lot of things to say about this movie, but I don't want to spend a few paragraphs on them. All I can say is that the film probably couldn't be any better. Giving it a rating based solely on the aspect of delight would probably be a bit of a mistake. I really have to give an X to the filming crew for making a sufficiently graphic and sufficiently audial work. Also, the soundtrack is pretty diverse: we have foreign punk rock, minimalist ethnic music, funky soul, some pop. Plus, every single detail of the being-stuck-in-a-canyon experience was taken into account, i.e. the physical and psychological (memories, thoughts, mirages, pain, solitude) conditions of the protagonist.

I also want to say that even though this may not be breaking news to most of you who are reading this review, but if you are all alone in your life, there won't be an idea crossing anyone's mind to help you in one of your worst moments. This movie shows what a worst moment can be. Think about that.

Cocoon.

Well, this one is not bad at all! The movie has an original story (or so I think it does) about a bunch of old people who discover a "fountain of youth", a health-rejuvenating pool with four rocks inhabited by aliens. Instead of providing you with more detailed spoiler alerts, allow me to mention three things here: 1) self-indulgence can really take the hell out of people and leave them miserable and helpless in the worst of times, 2) with the advent of youth there may be sins of youth as well, and lastly, 3) Don Ameche is simply amazing. Thumbs Up

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES... and then fails miserably

*SPOILER ALERT*

I just arrived home from the cinema after seeing this and I am simply amazed at how Nolan failed to deliver on almost every level. There are certain expectations when one goes to a super hero film, or action flick;

1. we expect tons of action, however TDKR simply fails to deliver, there is a scene with Batman fighting Bane, occasionally we see Catwoman having a brief fight against thugs, and then the ending has The Bat craft flying around shooting at tanks. That is just about it - the rest of the over long film is plot exposition, unnecessary character devices, macguffins, and annoying long drawn out dialogue. Hell, Batman at the beginning is reduced to a cripple with facial hair, unrecognizable, and it just takes an eternity before he dons the suit, and by then I am no longer enthused thanks to the bogged down plot.

2. We expect to see batman in a Batman film. OK after about an hour we see batman briefly, and I liked his scenes with Catwoman, but there was simply not enough. Perhaps 20% of the film showed batman in his suit the rest was Bane's story or the cop's story, or Gordon's story or Bruce as a cripple moaning about retirement, or being tortured, or trying to escape his confinement. He tries several times and fails, then the film just continues without him. Nolan traps Wayne and takes him right out of the picture. When Batman returns at the end the film is almost over, the Batman-less film is false advertising. They should take Batman off the poster and replace the image with Wayne on a walking stick.

3. The hype about Catwoman was truly overrated. Hathaway is ok as catwoman but not even a shadow of Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal. She is unsexy, looks bored, does very little, has a bit of screen time as the Catwoman and the rest is her romping around in black attire, looking ordinary rather than the super villain she is supposed to be. Her dialogue is poor and she is cruelly underused, almost just tacked on as an after thought.

4. The super villain is rather weak. Bane is supposed to be one of the ultimate villains. As a member of the league of Shadows he was supposed to be the ultimate fighter. Sure he whips Batman within an inch of his life, and later twists some  victims necks, but he seems to pick on the weak and when he kicks Batman's butt, it is only when Batman is out of shape and injured coming off retirement. Later Batman absolutely nails Bane and even manages to damage his mask rendering him almost helpless.

5. Holes in the plot. There are so many and no attempts to explain any of them. Some of the more glaring ones are how does Batman cope after being stabbed in the side, he acts as if there is no injury and surely the pain must be excruciating. The whole scene with the nuclear device exploding left me pondering. I was under the impression Batman may have ejected quickly, but the bomb blast would have caught him easily. No explanations are given. Too many characters know Batman is Bruce Wayne - so the secret is a joke really. Even the cop works it out just by deduction, and it does not make sense. We do not find out why all the cops were sent into the sewers and why they could not escape through a manhole. How does Bruce Wayne get from the prison area to Gotham without transport and in time to save the city? No explanations are given.

My opinion is it is not the worst Batman movie - strike that down to 'Batman Forever' perhaps, though that was at least fun and Batman was in it quite a lot. However, Nolan ruined the movie although he had such a great opportunity to present us with an action packed film. There are great story arcs in the comics that would have been worth pursuing. Instead Nolan simply provided us with a slog - too much convoluted plot twists and not enough action. The movie is supposed to be about Batman and he hardly gets any screen time as the Bat. Its all about Bane and his domination of the city, or Wayne's retirement. It takes too long to get going and when it does it does not deliver much. It cuts against the Batman franchise removing the Bat gadgets, removing the Batmobile, replacing it with a Blade Runner Spinner, and removing the Batman presence almost entirely. We see some iconic scenes, such as Batman looking over the city with cape flapping, or the Bat signal burned into a building, and even the Bat Cave makes a brief appearance, but these moments are few and far between. I am sure I am not the only one who walked out of the movie at the end wondering how Nolan got it so wrong.

Haha on IMDB there are many who think the whole damn film blows, and I am one of them.

When you come up with criticism about their beloved movie they call you a troll. I wrote on IMDB:

I think it is easy to dismiss all the backlash against the movie as mere trolling but it is not the case. The movie genuinely does not live up to the expectations of a Batman movie. Only fanboys are saying its a flawless masterpiece. realistically it is anything but! Nolan is just too caught up with his own agenda and does not deliver an action film which is what it is supposed to be. He did deliver tons of action and great characters in TDK and even BB, but for some reason just spends too much time trying to make this latest film as realistic as possible and sucks all the fun out of it. It is deadly serious and even disturbing at times but it is not all that entertaining for a Batman film. Kids will hate it, wont understand it, and adults are just going to wonder what all the fuss was about.

Its true 'Batman Begins' built to Batman in costume and made an impact but it worked better because the payoff was an enthralling finale, and Batman was as cool as he is in the comics.

IN TDKR Batman in costume was almost an afterthought. There was simply too much of everything else and the Batman costume was almost an annoyance, Nolan getting Bruce out of that costume every chance he could get, even rubbing him out for half the movie. Wayne had to try over and over to escape from the pit, almost like how you try and try again to escape from peril in a video game.

Eventually you do get out of the trap if you try enough we all know that. However, what sense does it make to have the escape clause in the first place as if Bane was making it an option for his prisoners. Does he really think he can keep Batman out of such a trap? Then he acts surprised when he sees Batman afterwards, thinking  I wonder how he got out? It really makes less sense the more you think about this film.

A final note I dont think the movie stinks or anything - it is a 3 star out of 5 movie, but it should have been excellent as the other Nolan Batman movies were and it simply was not even close.

I'm ok with not having Batman in a lot of it. I'd much rather have character development outside of the suit than "beating up dudes" in the suit.

In general, I don't like Superhero movies, especially origin stories. You can tell by my low rating for Batman Begins. The fact that The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises are about other characters than Batman is perfectly acceptable to me. All I really need to go by is that I was enthralled through all of TDKR, either in story or in action.

I think perhaps it bit off more than it could chew, which leaves a problem for pacing, editing, and developing new characters. But it was an effective, emotional and thrilling movie.

I love Dark Knight Rises and Bain is the most terrifying and strong villain ever in a superhero movie. He was massive!

Moonrise Kingdom

Beautiful fairytale of two kids who live on a small island community, fall in love, and runaway on an adventure of their own.  The adult cast is okay but the child actors really steal this romantic fantasy.  Enthusiastically recommended.

Saturn 3

Odd 80s film starring Farrah Fawcett who is cute and cant act, and her lover Kirk Douglas who is too old and can act. Hector the robot is a formidable presence who gets the hots for Farrah and why not. This causes jealousy as owner Harvey Keitel also wants Farrah. Hector tries to seduce her but Kirk stops it. The robots owner Keitel is assimilated into Hector's body and its a great gory bizarre ending. Nice film to kick back to and not bad effects overall. the music is terrific.  Saw this on TV in the 80s and loved it then. Returning to it now I can see the plot holes but its a simple idea with 3 people fighting a massive robot on Saturn spacecraft. Wonderful fun if you can put up with the acting.

If you really want a night of some downbeat viewing try 'Dancer in the Dark' with Bjork. It really is a powerful moving and very sad film. Bjork is a towering performer on this and surprisingly raw and real in her portrayal of Selma. The film is powerfully excruciatingly raw, Bjork putting on the most enigmatic role of her life as the Czech immigrant led into murder by extenuating circumstances. She meets her eventual fate at the gallows and sings a pain wracked song to remove herself from the trauma of dying, a raw, emotional performance that is unforgettable. Catherine Deneuve is a worker at the printing press and Selma gets a job there. She sings to the mechanised rhythms of the machinery with breathtaking choreography and amusing printing press percussion.

Siobhan Fallon has the beautiful role of the sympathetic prison warden. While Bjork sings 107 Steps Selma, almost blind walks methodically to the gallows. This is an unforgettable scene that has an unsettling edge, along with glorious uplifting orchestration. One of the most unsettling heart pounding scenes I have seen follows and it has never left me. It is a traumatic film but strangely uplifting. I loved it

The movie is full of action. I don't know what movie you watched but it was full of action. Granted, it has much more non-action scenes than other typical comic hero movies but thats what has always made this series different. That the series has plot, whether with holes or not, is what has made it stand out well above the typical comic hero movie, including really entertaining, fun, action-packed ones like Avengers.

This couldn't be more absurd. If you expected the movie not to feature Bruce Wayne even more so than Batman and to make the difference quite clear I'm not sure what movie you wanted to watch. The movie shows enough Batman and spends a healthy amount of time developing Bane and Gordon and the cop whose name escapes me now. I think Catwoman's character could've been explored a little morei fact. The fact that Batman disappears and comes back again ("rises") makes the comeback so much more expected, awaited, and espectacular. (even though I think Wayne's return to Gotham from the prison is too quick and weak).

What? Yes, Michelle Pfeiffer's catwoman, who was turned into catwoman because some cats licked her when she fell down the top of a building. That is the better catwoman? Obviously I think you were expecting the typical comic hero movie. I think that is what disappointed you. But you should have known, at least if you watched the previous two movies....

Bane is quite imposing as a villain, the only weak point in my view is his ending. He deserved better than that quicker-than-quick death.

I agree there are holes in the plot and that's the movies weakest link. I think is the weaker of the three Batman/Nolan movies in that regard. It makes up for it in epic-ness though.

It is certainly from a purist perspective the weaker of the three Nolan Batmans but probably the most exciting, epic one. And it towers above all the previous series, including over the two Tim Burton ones (both of which are weak and have better villains than the actual hero they are supposed to feature) but specially over the two disgustingly stupid Joe Schumacher atrocities. A fitting ending that is not perfect but is perfectly enjoayble and provides perfect entertainment.
