I like the Charts and Maps album quite a bit (Dead Horse), I found that via the free post/math rock music thread. It was one of my first reviews too. Do you consider Slint to be math rock? I guess they're an early example of it. But they were a real eye opener, love their stuff too. I bought a DIllinger Escape Plan CD (Calculating Infinity) because I'd heard how insanely complex it was. I still haven't gotten past the third song. I'm impressed all right, but it's just too busy and screamy. I'm still saving it for a rainy day though. I'm trying to think of other examples but I'm drawing a blank. I guess what I look for is something intelligent with some breathing space, complex but not totally in your face, low sounds and feedback good, screechy high end and screaming bad. I sometimes am unsure what is meant by Math Rock, I just haven't researched it that well yet.

Toe's For Long Tomorrow. I've checked them out recently seeing their topping the PR/MR list, and you'll get most of the aspects you described. You'll have some more post-rock and acoustic influences with a more permeable sound. Very chill in a lot of places, but their drummer is fantastic. Edited by Horizons - July 10 2012 at 18:55 |

OK, I have a question.
Why are only 5 of the 14 bands mentioned in PA's Math Rock definition in the PA? I mean, the definition mentions Don Caballero, Six Horse, Shellac, U.S. Maple, Keelhaul, Craw, June 44, Rodan, The For Carnation, Crain, Drive Like Jehu, Tristeza, Ruins and Zeni Geva, but only Don Caballero, Tristeza, Ruins (as Zeuhl), Keelhaul and Zeni Geva (both as Exp/Post Metal) are in PA. What's up with that?
I mean, why are they mentioned as Math Rock if they're not in the PA as Post Rock/Math Rock bands or any other sub-genre? Are they Math Rock bands without prog tendencies at all?
Just trying to get a grip of this Math Rock label. It's very new to me.

The bios here for genres and bands aren't very professional imo. You really can't take them too serious.
Best way to get to know a genre is by listening to the bands.

Battles, Samual Jackson 5, and Charts and Maps are some good ones to check out for varying styles.

From the videos i've seen on YouTube they're hit or miss, even when they aren't doing the best vocally, like TMV, the musicianship is still stop on.
