I refuse to work on other music projects. If anyone else in my band wants to, they must ask me first.
Why would anyone want to work on other projects other than just one? I don't know if I could work on something else because of the amount of time I put into the current one.
Or is that the goal? To find such a project that you don't ever want to do anything else? But dude- congrats!!!! Edited by Smurph - July 09 2012 at 15:04 |

I could see working on other projects once your main project gets underway, or if it looks like the main project isn't going anywhere.

But if the main project isn't going anywhere change it. Work harder. Change it more. If you choose projects that allow you to do literally whatever you want that should never be the problem. The problem then is no longer with the project. The problem is with the people involved with the project. Or if your main project is under way, why not start working on an extra demo for the same project. If it doesn't sound enough like your main project, screw it. Because don't let sound hold you back. Your band doesn't like it? Make it better. They still don't like it? Make it even better. They still don't like it and want to keep it seperate? Then you didn't make it good enough. Make it better.
I'm also semi-joking because I know not everyone is willing to do certain stuff. Ha Edited by Smurph - July 09 2012 at 15:14 |

That kind of makes me laugh. Listening to my collection of Tom Petty CDs, and I think that it is kind of funny that he has released 3 solo albums without the Heartbreakers. It is kind of like, dude, that band is called Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. You don't need to release a solo album. Especially, since I believe that the Heartbreakers contribute to some of his solo material anyways (don't quote me on that though). I think that Bruce Springsteen has release a solo album too. I am sure that there have been other similar "solo" releases. |

Yea- that's REALLY weird. haha. What an ego-hogging a-hole you would have to be to do that. I mean, are they just going out of their way to reduce the royalties for their band? I mean dude- Those guys are both millionaires. I would be slapping my bands name on my solo work even if they didnt help just so I can continue to help them out as my buddies.
But I guess it makes sense cause in the end Tom Petty really just wants to suck his own peepee as does Bruce.

Or what its saying is "Hey this is me without a filter. Now I can have an excuse as to why this album is not as good as my others."

1 - paid live sound gig for a presentation or something (one time thing) 2 - unpaid live sound gig for a church (multiple days of the week) 3 - write music for my friend's short film 4 - write music for web series (as of now nothing else to work on yet) 5 - write music for personal side project I'm lazing on the writing music part. Need some motivation, but still. I think I've got a lto of good things underway.

I find those types of things annoying. If the line-up is like exactly the same, why make a solo release out of it?

OOOOH I see. The whole "sound gig" thing bypassed my brain. That's awesome. You mean running a live soundboard haha. I processed it as something else like a tard. For some reason I was picturing you playing in 5 different bands going ... "WHA?" haha

Peter Hammil did it and it kicked ass. Haha. But I think he had other reasons.

I'm pretty sure the lineup is different, even though the heartbreakers do help. Songwriting is very similar though (especially on Full Moon Fever). I'm pretty sure songs form his "solo" and band career both get mixed onto the same greatest hits albums.
Actually, imo Petty's best album (Wildflowers) is solo. (And probably the most truly solo of the bunch, I'd say)

I think Hammill gave himself more freedom on his solo discs. VdGG was a fairly successful band, and people kind of knew what to expect from them. The solo albums are where Hammill experimented with new things. I generally like them better for that reason. Edited by HolyMoly - July 09 2012 at 16:02 |

The album features all members of the Heartbreakers with the exception of drummer Stan Lynch, who left (or got fired by) the band earlier in 1994. Steve Ferrone plays drums on Wildflowers and would join the band officially the following year. However, the album was not credited to the Heartbreakers because, in Petty's words, "Rick (Rubin) and I both wanted more freedom than to be strapped into five guys."[3] Freedom notwithstanding, Petty chose to use most of his regular band as session players, demonstrating his comfort with that format. Rolling Stone placed Wildflowers at number twelve on their list of the best albums of the nineties.[4]

I haven't heard "Wildflowers". I was a fairly big Petty fan for a while in the late 80s, but by "Great Wide Open" I'd just stopped listening to him, no real reason why. But I like the albums "Torpedoes" through "Full Moon Fever" a lot. Never heard the first two albums either. I'll check out the ones I missed sometime. I've been re-listening to the albums I know recently and they're still good.

Freedom is always better. And I want to see famous bands be so crazy that they can literally do whatever they want.
But yea Silent Corner and Empty Stage is genius.
