Lost is an American television series that originally aired on ABC from September 22, 2004 to May 23, 2010, consisting of six seasons. Lost is a sci-fi/drama series that follows the survivors of the crash of a commercial passenger jet flying between Sydney and Los Angeles, on a mysterious tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean. The story is told in a heavily serialized manner. Episodes typically feature a primary storyline on the island, as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character's life.

Most episodes of Lost start with a recap sequence, with the words "Previously on Lost" heard at the beginning. The voice is that of former ABC chairman Lloyd Braun, who originally pitched and commissioned the Lost pilot.[1] These words are followed by a series of short clips that recap the scenes that are important for the current episode. The purpose of these "Previously on Lost" clips is to both remind viewers about current and past storylines, as well as aid comprehension for those who may not have seen the last few episodes of the show. These segments last for approximately one minute, forty-five seconds, and include original music by Michael Giacchino

The show gets better after season 1, too. Season 1 is a lot of character build up, finding out their histories and why they wound up on that plane, etc. as well as basic survival stuff and the characters trying to get off the island. Seriously, the show really takes off and becomes really, really, cool from season 2 onward.

Seasons 4 and 5 have some of the coolest episodes. Season 3 does, too, but has a few 'meh' episodes.

Season 3 has the worst episodes in the show (Jack's Tattoo is probably my least favorite and the on-island story doesn't advance the plot either really).

However, I'm going to disagree with your assessment and say that while season 4 and 5 finally start making progress in solving the mysteries, I don't quite enjoy them as much as season 1 and 2, the characters are my favorite part of Lost and by season 4, we're focussing half our energy on characters that weren't even on flight 815, some who never even get a proper backstory episode. (Charlotte and Miles are probably my least favorite main characters, I would rather have had (SPOILER ALERT) Echo and Ana Lucia / Libby / Boon / even Shannon around then either of them. Lapidus is cool just by being badass but his story is not really well developed as the season 1 and 2 characters)

(Oh but Faraday is cool)

Then again, episodes like the one with Sun and Jin, or the one with Desmond going crazy, are pretty cool.

I actually agree that Seasons 1 and 2 are overall better than 3, 4, and 5, I was just using them as examples for someone who hasn't gotten far into the show, like Matt, that cool stuff happens in the later seasons. I don't like Charlotte either, Miles is alright, and Faraday is the coolest of the freighter people.

Matt doesn't know about Ben either!

Ben is the best at being the worst. I love him and hate him at the same time.

True.

I'm pretty sure there are 4 parts in Lost, each lasting about 30 seconds, each featuring Locke, that if you watched them, would explain the entire series.
