DOH!

I don't know why you didn't go...I went last night and thought it was a great movie despite all the nay-sayers.  I didn't even think the story was as frightfully bad as many complained...everything was at least on the "Good" level, and nearly everything was at least on the "great" if not "awesome" level.  I'm totally glad I dragged someone along to see it with me, and she even seemed to enjoy it. LOL

Some friends want to go see Brave today...I'll probably go because I'm bored, but I doubt it'll be able to match Prometheus on any level...

Week-end by Godard

This guy keeps on amazing me with each film. Some brilliant dialogues, love the absurd takes and scenes. It's the most experimental, or surreal, film I've seen from him, reminded me of some Buñuel; there's a lot social and political criticism. Recommended if you want to see some fun and extremely original camera work, and if you don't mind if there's no real plot, just lots of ideas and thoughts thrown in.

Brazil by Terry Gilliam

I like the idea more than the movie. It's basically another dystopia story, so not much originality to be found within the plot. However, I must applaude Terry for his inclusion of humor, reminding the viewer of some Monty Python, but at the same time, the result is not good for me. It tries to be serious in its criticism to society but it just doesn't work.

Todo Sobre mi Madre by Almodovar

Second Almodovar film I watch: top-notch stuff. Tranvesties, mother-son relationship, very dramatic story told with a lot of heart and still there's room for great humour that doesn't ruin the seriousness of the story. Highly recommended.

Iron Man 2

Overall a fairly limp sequel to the terrific first film, not that they didn't try but the distractions of other characters leading up to the inevitable Thor/Nick Fury/Avengers crossovers thinned an already limited premise.  Things are helped a bit by the excellent Sam Rockwell as Downey's main weapons competitor and the always good Mickey Rourke as a crazy Russian genius.

A Night to Remember

Though highly understated and not entirely convincing, this fourth or fifth crack at telling the disaster on film is also to-the-point and mostly free of extraneous subplotting.  James Cameron's epic may be more technically correct and dramatically facile, but the look and cast of this 1958 British production feels right and the visuals still look terrific.  Far superior to any of the earlier show-biz trash versions or bizarre German propaganda flicks, A Night to Remember is probably the most sober and carefully made of the Titanic movies.

It was a good movie.  I like the themes.  1980s sci fi is fun for seeing how people think the future would be- flying cars but no cell phones.  LOL

My wife went to bed midway through, but I think the themes of eternal life and all are very well presented.  Directors in the 80s loved lens filters though, didn't they?

I think I'd like to read the book.

The book is good, but it's a fairly different story from the movie.  One of the few cases in which I prefer the movie to the book, actually.

^ well the nice thing about sci-fi is that it's malleable; maybe all that rain in future Los Angeles makes cellphones impractical

The book's pretty fantastic I reckon!  As SaltyJon said, the story is reasonably different but it unpacks the themes some more, and has aspects that are missing from the film (had to be done, films aren't books, stuff has to get cut out of course) and you get a very different ending in terms of Deckard's obsession etc

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

As good or better second chapter in Guy Ritchie's re-imagining of the Doyle characters as they dash across Europe trying to derail an attempt to provoke a world war by Professor Moriarty played brilliantly cold by Jared Harris.   Holmes' ability to see tactics evolve in his head is further explored to good success, as is the emphasis on 19th Century technology and the bond between Watson and Holmes.   Over the top and suspends reality at times but never at the expense of good fun or an involving story.

Hiroshima Mon Amour by Alain Resnais

I had trouble understanding much what "she" was saying, but I really liked the well-though dialogues, the images, that there's only two characters that talk. It's a movie that you can't get distracted one second.

Wanderlust: one of those s$%tty, historically insignificant (I suppose) movies.

For those who have NOT seen the movie:

Here is a quick breakdown: the whole movie - an hour and a half (minus a really virtuosic flamenco performance in the middle, an appearance and mentioning of Ray Liotta in the end of the film, and perhaps the part where "Maurice Gibb" chases the car bucknaked) - is just a single epic mild torture, although, I must say, in several places it is WAY beyond mild. It's worse.

If you are planning on watching this movie, do yourself a favor - do not watch it. Think of something else to spend an hour and a half.

To sum up, one giant step backwards and down for human civilization, one giant step backwards and down for Hollywood.

Safe House - Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds....I like spy movies and action movies. Add a great supporting cast; Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard and a Ruben Blades cameo. I liked the story line of throwing together a veteran spy and a young guy trying to move up in the agency.

Hanna - Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett...Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) does an excellent job of portraying a young girl who has been trained by her ex-spy father to avenge the murder of her mother. Eric Bana (Troy, Star Trek) does not disappoint as the father but the stand-out performance is by Cate Blanchett as the villian.
Great line, "Hanna, what did your mother die from?"..."Three bullets".

Fast Five - Vin Diesel and Paul Walker continue the story of  Dom Toretto and Brian O'Connor but this time they're being pursued by a no-nonsense federal agent, Dwayne Johnson. What I liked about this movie was that they got away from the street racing scene and made a full blown action movie. Great supporting cast and of course, the ending was left open for a sequel that will bring back Michelle Rodriguez.
