I actually have tried some Cynic - I really like the album "Traced in Air" but didn't care much for the other stuff I heard by them for whatever reason. I'll have to see what this "Gorguts" is all about.

I'm fourteen and I like EVERYTHING, apart from some of the too-epic ELP. I'm especially fond of eclectic prog, particularly Gentle Giant. Also avant prog, like Zappa and Beefheart. I also listen to classical music of all periods (especially 20th century) and all kinds of Jazz.

When I was 18 and younger, I only dug classic prog, PF, KC, and Yes. Never been a fan of metal and probably never will be, although I do admire the skills and approach that some musicians possess. I just don't find their music to be mature, revolutionary, and mind-blowing. |
That's just because you don't LIKE it. I once thought nothing with screamy death metal style vocals could be good. Then I found Epica and Orphaned Land, and because they only mix it in, I was able to get into it. Years later, I've tried out a couple all death-metal style vocal bands, and while I don't think I'll ever really be "in to" that, I can say that I recognized a lot of complexity and skill involved in the making of that music.

Unless its maudlin of the Well. I'm listening right now to Colors by Between the Buried and Me. Do you know them?

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Can't say I do - the only reason I've heard that name was (I think) because they toured with Animals as Leaders. I might have to check them out eventually. I have a long list of things to check out, though, even after the many things I've already listened to. Sooooo much music....

Just have your paycheck direct deposited to a couple of music sites and you'll be OK.

how on earth can you be a Prog Metal fan and not know BtBaM? That should be a priority. Colors and The Great Misdirect are gems.

between the buried and me are 'progressive metalcore'... and they play a shed-load of notes, so i guess that means they are 'progmetal' around here -their main guitarist is some kind of shredmonster... obviously = progressive-i liked 'colors' pretty well
gorguts, on the other hand, were a real deathmetal band... with true compositional talent, unlike most of their peers... 'progmetal' fans probably won't have the passion or attention span for their records... luc lemay is/was a genius... he went on to a career as a self-employed, boutique furniture craftsman... i hear he's been trying to get the band back together but it's been a tumultuous/dangerous process

No, BtBAM are real prog-metal says just about everyone so I'm afraid you're wrong. They do play lots of notes sure, but so does Rimsky Korsakov and he 'aint on this site .
They have an eclectic style; write complicated, dynamic songs and push boundaries. Sounds pretty prog to me?

'real prog metal' what's that? a brand?... 'obviously=progmetal' was a joke just like the 'passion' comment was clearly tongue-in-cheek... i would call it 'real prog metalcore' - the breakdowns, vocal phrasing, and transitions are straight out of the post-hardcore, metalcore tradition... their style harkens back to the original 'underground' incarnation of metalcore bands like (early-mid 90s)early converge, coalesce, and earth crisis... not the later commercial(early 2000s) stuff... and yes the tremolo riffing is adopted from florida death metal... but all metalcore bands used that style as well
and your testy reply is perhaps understandable as defense of your 'territory', though it has nothing to do with what i was saying... i was making fun of 'genre' much like the guy from beyond the buried called their record new wave polka or whatever...
oh yeah, i find rimsky-korsakov a bit sentimental for my tastes, never really liked the late romantic period... except for some bruckner... i've been excoriated for a lack of affinity for mahler ... weepy s#$t

But that has absolutely nothing to do with whether they're prog or not. ELP use lots of ideas 'straight out the classical music scene' and that doesn't stop them being prog; King Crimson from jazz thanks to Bruford mostly, that doesn't stop them being prog. I appreciate your attempt to show your superior knowledge but it doesn't mean you're not wrong just because you did a quick google search...

I don't quite understand your point

Wow you've listened to some classical music, now I must definitely be way out my depth and agree with everything you were saying
Strange anyway, we obviously have very different musical tastes, seeing as the late romantic period might be my favourite classical era. I agree with you about the Mahler, but neither of those three composers are really the 'heavyweights' of that time. Tchaikovsky is definitely my favourite, guy never put a foot wrong.

you're free to construct whatever narrative makes you happy... wrong about what exactly? marketing strategies? wasn't questioning their 'progressiveness' just the perceptions of what makes a group progressive... and what becomes acceptable to admit as influences as trends come and go...
and as far as 'classical music', i've listened to a lot of it... but then, again... who can question the wisdom of the younger generation...?
the point was lost because it's forbidden territory, ideologically...

I'm 18, and while I greatly enjoy Progressive Metal, it's Symphonic and Ecelectic Progressive Rock that really captures my attention more!

I'm pretty sure you were trying to make a hilarious joke that didn't quite come off actually. If you want to question what's progressive nowadays and what should be on this sight go moan at a moderator, they get stuff like that all the time.

You've completely lost me... If you're over 18, why hang out in this thread unless you get your kicks from feeling superior to teenagers?
