No, he is considered influential because he showed a more minimal approach could work, again, in guitar and he also put the emphasis on delicious tones rather than just blistering combinations of notes. Music follows this cycle of simple-complex-simple, nothing new there. Sid Vicious was a hero for those who got tired of prog's ponderous nature. Metal excess was the answer to rudimentary punk rock and Cobain pushed the balance back towards simplicity again. It goes on. How many bedroom guitarists have succeeded anyway in acquiring as much influence as Cobain? Does it really matter what he is considered? |

Is Cobain considered a Guitar hero? (and I don't mean just because he's featured on dumbass a video game) I thought he was considered to be a songwriter of his generation rather than a musician.

This simply does not compute - *fans* make all kinds of vainglorious claims about their favourites, and you and I are not immune from that. It does not make it a universal truth or an undeniable fact.

He is no 73 in Rolling Stones all time guitarists. Not that that means anything. However, playing the guitar can be like ringing a bell

I obviously don't. But that is a claim that he is a guitar hero. |

Johnny B Goode reference there methinks? However, no-one on PA would dare undermine the OP's loathing and disgust for a popular music recording as represented by the proffered example. Life's too short, get over it and move on to the thing that brings us all together on PA to celebrate the things that make life worthwhile.

But it is a claim and not a fact as you implied when you first mentioned his guitar hero status. He is a rock hero to some, one that happened to play guitar, but few credit him with any guitar skills, especially anyone who can play a guitar. Certainly no one here ever made that claim.

For some reason when I see disgrace and music together in one sentence, this guy comes to mind:

Oh, come on. The people who made those videos probably intentionally made them that bad to get attention. See, my personal opinion is that the biggest disgrace to music is the fact that Justin Bieber is successful.

He auditioned to play bass for The Melvins, but was not kept. He remained however friend with them and contributed some guitar and percussion on their album 'Houdini'.

What film was it in? Luckily I missed this song and whatever film it was at the time. How many wives did he need to pay for at the time to have to do this dirge?

I said nothing about the Pixies and Soundgarden. It's my impression, from the music I've heard and discussions I've had with other musicians, that Nirvana had a negative influence in that they inspired many bands after them with similar not-too-special songwriting and limited instrumental skills. I'm not anything approaching a popular music expert, though, so I could be wrong. In my above post I meant to point out that it wasn't like popular music was that much better before Nirvana came along. Sure, hair metal guitarists had technical ability, but there's no use for that if there's a deficiency of emotion and songwriting skills. I haven't been too impressed with Cobain's songwriting from what I've heard, but at least he had a point to his music, unlike many hair bands. The argument could also be made that Nirvana did a good thing in influencing thousands of kids to play guitar, because they realized that they could play for fun without having to be virtuosos.
