Reading this made me want to puke. If Primus isn't prog than what is? Instead of just saying they arn't prog, explain a little. They are much more of a prog band than many of those already listed on this god forsaken site.

I concur wholeheartedly! Haha Claypool is possibly one of the most amazing virtuosic bassists in the history of the planet, and he knows what he's at. He can play technically he's worked with Danny Carey and Adrian Belew. So even if Primus don't inducted i really think Les should. He's very creative, sometimes not overly technical, but Prog doesn't require that. So i think Yes Claypool should, I'm not sure about Primus though.. |
I heard very little of Primus, but I must say that Claypool's vocals struck me definitely!

Spent an evening listening to Les Claypool with and without Primus - Les is Les, so please give the clue to the Squire connection - Flea maybe..........

The latest EP can put them into the Experimental Rock section of prog,
and their live shows alone put them into the Fusion scene.

They definetely have prog material, "southbound pachyderm" could have easily been recorded by Crimson in 1974. Their influences are steeped in prog with Les' Wetton/Squire/ hybrid bass palying, Ler's Frippesque guitar noodling and Herb's phenomenal progressive Neil Peart styled drumming. They've covered prog songs as varied as YYZ, Theela Hun Jinjeet, Have A Cigar, Intrude, In The Flesh and La Villa Strangiato and showed that they all logically fit within their style. I'd say they're not a prog band overall, but definetely of interest to prog fans.

I've only heard a couple of Primus LPs and really dug them, even if they get a bit silly at times. I own and love the Primus EP "Sailing the Seas of Cheese"....their influences are obvious from their excellent cover versions of "Intruder" and "Have a Cigar".....are they "prog"? Hell, if Styx, Rush and Kansas are considered progressive than Primus should be considered avant-garde!
And, yeah, Chris Squire definitely had an influence on Les....Great Taste/Les Claypool!

Prog-influenced definetely, I'd say they're one of the mest creative current bands in music definetely.

On a semi-side note, a friend of mine let me hear Primus play Rush's "La Villa Strangiato" on a live set. It was an amazing cover, and Les pulled off the bass parts amazingly!!
I'm not sure if I would consider them Prog, but I can see where they may be prog-like. Like previously said, they have plenty of Prog influences and have a great virtuosic sound that is evident on their stage performances.

Define 'Fusion' - once this meant 'Jazz Rock Fusion', which as devote
Primus fan, I know they rarely touch on. But having just read on
Amazon.UK about Dave Matthews being 'Fusion', I get to wonder if
somebody has yet again been screwing with musical terminology yet
again, as with R'n'B or indeed frequently with the term
progressive rock here?

Although I'm a big Primus fan (I own all their material)...I'm sure chances are you're gonna get some flack bringing them up here. In their own right, they're pretty unique but stop and investigate the songs...they're basically a jam band with some quirky moments (live will tell you all you need to know). Don't get me wrong, I think they've always been good, just not THAT good to be considered in the "annals" of these archives...
But then again, hell why not? For their influences/textures alone; so much snobbery around...
