I've always enjoy actual band members more than studio/sit-in drummers. Just me though.

Now that you mention it, you're right!
Are you referring to Vinny Colaiuta? I mean he's done studio work, just like GH and MP, but Vinny's been part of Frank Zappa's band, Megadeth, and Herbie Hancock's band. |

He was a "sit-in" for Megadeath, he played on 1 album. Under the album's recognition it mentions him as a studio musician. Zappa is fair, great for him. But he is a mainly studio/sit-in musician.

I wasn't arguing that he isn't a session guy. Just saying, he's been a member of a few bands before.
Mike Mangini was more or less a session guy until DT, so now that he's a band member, is he now a better player? |

I don't attach skill to more static band members. I just like seeing their writing and playing styles delivered more. I know nothing of Mike's studio material, and i believe a lot/some of the drumming was always decided before he was chosen. So i can't really give my opinion on him specifically.

Well, of course, the members of DT knew MM's ability before he joined, the guy won many awards and broke world records in drumming technique and speed. If you want to check out his previous work, I know he's on James LaBrie's first solo album, as well as the two Mullmuzzler albums. He was also a member of Extreme in the 90s, and a member of Steve Vai's band (oh, six degrees of Zappa). Edited by darkshade - June 28 2012 at 18:55 |

I knew of his speed awards from YouTube videos and such. Studio playing is the best way to get exposure like Gavin Harrison in Renaissance and Iggy Pop . Interested to hear his writing on DT's upcoming album.

That's cool. I was just letting you know if you ever were interested.
I'm also interested to hear what Mangini will add to the new DT album when they go back to the studio this fall. Apparently he's been coming up with ideas for the band, and they've been digging it, so we might see a progression in their sound for the next album (I hope). |

You might really like the first Mullmuzzler album, it's a pretty eclectic album (I haven't heard the second album). And the James LaBrie album is alright if you like DT, good drumming on that one. I don't care for Extreme, and Steve Vai's stuff bores me, except for a few songs on his first album.

Me too. DT would do well with some further development to their sound. |

It's because they ARE wrong. Portnoy will be remember as one of the most influential drummers of the last 20 years, while Gavin will be remembered as a good drummer. Period.

He might be influential, but does that mean he is objectively good? (Hint: Quality can never be measured objectively) |

And that is a crime to drummers. MP is so over-rated and boring anymore. His style is nothing more than an extension of Neil Peart. |

You're right. And I also think someone who can count to ten deserves an award just as much as someone who can solve complex equations, because who can say which is objectively better? |
