I don't think he's overrated. He WAS a pretty progressive drummer in the 90s, it's just that in the last few DT albums he fell into a sort of pattern or stuck in his ways. That's why I've enjoyed his work in Transatlantic and Neal Morse's solo albums, the music is different than DT so he gets to do different things, though even then you still know what to expect.

Portnoy exclaimed that his work on Neal's upcoming solo album in September contains his best work in a long time, and that is not something MP usually says for any forthcoming album with him on it (DT or otherwise, so we'll see).

As far as a drummer who knows how to really 'rock out', I've always seen Portnoy as the best of the last 30 years.

Voted Portnoy as his drumming on DT, Transatlantic and some Neal Morse solo albums is outstanding.

I've never really noticed the drumming as anything especially spectacular on PT though I do have some of their albums.
Can someone point me at a classic Gavin Harrison track or two ? Would be interested to find out what I've been missing out on.

Two classics in my opinion, though some may disagree. There's of course much more, but these two tracks really showcase his unique style and technique. I just really like the sound of the way he plays - very natural, very musical.

I'm too lazy to think about other PT songs, but nobody listens to Gavin's side project. Hey, thanks for the link Austin. I was aware of his other projects, but never really took the chance at having a listen. I'm going to listen to few tracks of Circles right now, maybe even some live footage if I can find some on youtube.

Those are two good ones, but people never credit The Creator Has a Mastertape. That's a superb example IMO.

I'm not that big of a fan of neither bands, but I find Gavin's drumming to be a much more tasteful, and intricate addition to PT, while Portnoy's drumming is a bit too much in my face.
