Max (Fox), have you listened to any of Gavin/05Ric yet?
There's actually not that much up on youtube, so I just listened to this track, but I was absolutely blown away by this one. The Bass playing is so uniquely technical and Gavin definitely has a Bruford/ Crimso influenced rhythm going on there - 21/8, I think? Thanks for introducing me to 05ric. Just a phenomenal bass player, I mean he uses like an 8 string bass, the guy is nuts! I'm seriously considering on trying to get my hands on album by these guys.
Yea sadly there is nothing on Youtube...
Yeah, it's a shame. They should be more known. I'm probably going to ask my local record store owner to order me in a copy of Circles. Having a physical copy of an album just appeals to me more. CD quality is great as well. I'm also one of those guys that likes to study liner notes.

Thanks... I have both of those and having listened again agree they are pretty fine songs with excellent drumming.

I'm not that big of a fan of neither bands, but I find Gavin's drumming to be a much more tasteful, and intricate addition to PT, while Portnoy's drumming is a bit too much in my face.
Portnoy is boring? Harrison is more interesting? Harrison is a "technical BEAST?!!!"
I bet we set up an "authors" poll with Stephanie Meyers Vs. J.R.R. Tolkien and we'll see similar results, with Meyers winning and people stating some of the same reasons why....

I've never really noticed the drumming as anything especially spectacular on PT though I do have some of their albums. Can someone point me at a classic Gavin Harrison track or two ? Would be interested to find out what I've been missing out on.

Those are two good ones, but people never credit The Creator Has a Mastertape. That's a superb example IMO.

I never really got into people loving his early DT drumming so much. My favourite is the middle era or SFaM and SDoIT. I think I&W is his worst because not only does he not do anything notable at any point in the album (besides keeping up with the times in Metropolis I suppose), but he has the worst tone known to man. And the snare trigger is atrocious, especially in Learning to live.

I'm too lazy to think about other PT songs, but nobody listens to Gavin's side project. That is where his pinnacle really is.
I personally love their debut the most, but they're all great albums.
Hey, thanks for the link Austin. I was aware of his other projects, but never really took the chance at having a listen. I'm going to listen to few tracks of Circles right now, maybe even some live footage if I can find some on youtube.

Voted Portnoy as his drumming on DT, Transatlantic and some Neal Morse solo albums is outstanding.
