Some times I have also thought about which could be the ideal PA line-up, and even though I wouldn't agree with every member, I think this might be it:

Vocals: Peter Gabriel.
Guitars: Robert Fripp (though Steve Hackett might just as well be chosen, or even Steve Howe).
Keyboards: Keith Emerson (though Tony Banks might just as well be chosen, or a bit less likely, even Rick Wakeman).
Flute: Ian Anderson (sharing some vocal duties).
Bass: Crhis Squire, sharing some vocal duties.
Drums: Bill Bruford.

When you said "ideal PA lineup," at first I thought you meant a band composed of members of this site!  Which would probably be an interesting topic, too.  You could kick out everyone in my first suggested lineup except for Rob and I, add Phideaux and Smurph, and then a drummer...who plays drums around here?
LOL That would be pretty cool. If you guys needed a guitarist or a piano player, I'm the guy! Smile Austin (Horizons) plays drums and I assume he's quite good considering he can play Mars Volta material. Shocked

Alright, well, here we go:

Phideaux: vocals, acoustic guitars, synthesizers
Max (Fox on the Rocks): Piano and keyboards
Rob (Epignosis): Bass, mellotron, guitar, backing vocals
Austin (Horizons): drums and percussion
deleriumofthethush: drums and percussion
Greg (Smurph): guitar
Jacob (Ambient Hurricanes): guitar and backing vocals

Now we've got our PA supergroup Cool.
Approve Sounds good. Wow, I see a lot of guitars, and two drummers! Thumbs Up Aw yeah. What kind of music would we be making?

I don't know.  If I had my way, it would be heavy prog bordering on metal with avant-garde tinges and incorporating sections of post-rock and Iona-style synthy interludes.  Lots of dissonance, great riffs, emotional and intense, lots of tension, somewhat depressing with a few glimmers of hope to point forward.
That's just what I've been writing lately, but put all our heads together and who knows what we'd come up with LOL.

Why don't you guys just give it a try, you could just try and record and share through internet, many artists are doing it that way this days. Perhaps one song, at least a cover.

^ I wish I knew at least one guy in that line-up, albeit I've heard quite a bit about Akerfeldt.

Thought of another one I would like, all Scandinavian:
Rikard Sjoblom (Beardfish): Vocals/Keyboards
Christer Akerberg (Trettioariga Kriget): Guitar
Dag Lunquist (Trettioariga Kriget): Drums
Kristian Karl Hultgren (Wobbler): Bass/Saxophone
Would have been all Swedish but I wanted Kristian Karl Hultgren of Wobbler over Jonas Reingold, and Wobbler's Norwegian. Jonas Reingold is fantastic as well though.

Kate Bush, David Gilmour, Greg Lake and Neil Peart because it's so odd it would just work.

Exactly. I was trying to get the entire Porcupine Tree to play drums, even the guy who wore sunglasses.

Porcupine Tree member who is gonna play drum in my supergroup... or not.

Look how his foot is stepping on that thing. What a natural drummer!

That actually sounds like it could be a really good band.

I like the idea of two keyboardists but not the idea of just limiting Banks to Mellotron.Would be a horrible waste imo.

If I wanted something like a traditional mid-70s symphonic sound, I'd choose a line-up like this:

Vocals/Keyboards - Steve Walsh
Guitar 1 - Steve Morse
Guitar 2 - Ritchie Blackmore
Bass - Chris Squire
Moogs and Mellotrons - Rick Wakeman
Piano and whatever other keyboards they decide to use - Jordan Rudess
Drums - Nick D'Virgilio

For something a little more experimental:

Vocals - Peter Hammill
Guitar 1 - Robert Fripp
Bass/Vocals - Greg Lake
Keyboards/Sax/Violin/Vocals - Matthew Parmenter (Discipline)
More keyboards - Rick Wright
Drums - Pierre van der Linden

PETER HAMMILL - VOCALS
STEVE HOWE - GUITARS
DAVE STEWART - KEYS
RICHARD SINCLAIR - BASS
BILLY COBHAM - DRUMS
DAVE ARBUS - VIOLIN, SAX AND FLUTE
