Both are fantastic drummers, and up there with my favourites. I will go with Harrison by the slightest hair. His playing is just out of this world. But Portnoy is certainly not far behind. He's incredible.

I have to say the present score in this poll really surprises me.
As good as Harrison is (and believe me he is very very good) he should not be this far ahead of Portnoy who is one of the very best drummers I've ever heard/seen. I suspect there's just too much of the anti DT sentiment creeping in here and clouding judgement. Take away any of the usual peripheral stuff surrounding DT and Portnoy out of the equation and judge them on their abilities please.
Sorry Gav, this just has to be Portnoy.

Sorry Gav, this just has to be Portnoy. | The poll question is "which is better" but the first post asks "which do you prefer?" (and does so twice).
I agree Portnoy is more skilled, but I much prefer Harrison's smoother style and sound.

I agree, but oh well. Every forum has its biases.
And whats with everyone asking about Chris Maitland?

Portnoy for sure... he has influenced almost every single part of prog rock in the last 15 years... I think his work in DT, and side project and collaboration with Neal Morse, Transatlantic, LTE, John Arch, Avenged Sevenfold, O.S.I. and so on... his better... and I like him way more than Gavin... though he is the best musician in Porcupine Tree...

I agree, I really like Gavin and he's a skilled drummer but I think Portnoy wins by a longshot.

Harrison is actually the more technical drummer (if you play drums you'll know why) and in general the better of the two. Portnoy has a more unique style which pronanly gives him some extra points....

I play drums, I still find Portnoy's parts to be tougher. Especially in Stream of Conciousness and The Dance of Eternity. However, I will admit that Gavin has some quite difficult parts. And yes, I've always though Gavin should try a more unique style.

IMO, Gavin is much more unique than Portnoy... he's pretty original, at least. He has atmospheric and better cymbal work vs Portnoy.

Portnoy is more about acrobatics, actual physical difficulty... Harrison is about nuances, little details, tough rhythms... I can bet 293718236 USD I don't have that, put in the situation where both had to play in a jazz band, Harrison would do it in a heartbeat, Portnoy would limit himself to the typical swing ride rhythm...

I truly believe that Gavin is a more skilled drummer when it comes to sheer technicality. Portnoy is great and plays, well, fast, but Gavin can maintain a different time signature on every limb of his body. I go with Gavin by a long shot!

and then there was music...

Gavin by an extremely large margin. Portnoy may be a bit more technically proficient, but Gavin's style and approach to drumming is impeccable.
