That was a fairly good article.  Did you actually read it?

Also, I'm quite sure Slarti put the emphasis on the word "corporate" without noticing this tiny little word "government" at the start of the heading.

Of course I read it.  I see you're still laboring under the sad delusion that I think everything government does is good. LOL

Copied the link at buzzflash.com

Fine Points of Florida Law (Happiness Is A Warm Gun? - BSL)

In April, the Tampa Police Department issued preliminary security guidelines to control areas around August's Republican National Convention in the city. Although the Secret Service will control the actual convention arena, Tampa Police are establishing a zone around the arena in which weapons will be confiscated (including sticks, rocks, bottles and slingshots). Police would like to have banned firearms, too, but state law prevents cities from restricting the rights of licensed gun-carriers. [Tampa Bay Times, 4-3-2012]

But the author is someone who is critical of both corporate and social welfare.  Surely you noticed that.

I couldn't think of some other thread where this would have fit better (this is why we need a general thread about all sports! Tongue), so I guess it's going here. If there is a better thread to move it to, then please feel free to move it there admins.

As much as I love sports, I've really come to hate ESPN and the majority of sports journalists. Very few of them talk about the details and intricacies of the games, and they tend to break down team sports into being about individual players, rather than...oh I don't know...the team itself. Also, regardless of some of my opinions on Mark Cuban, this restored my faith in humanity a bit.

So?  I don't maintain that our social welfare system is perfect either.  He also points out that it was reformed.

He also points out how corporate welfare drives the need for social welfare.

You will never convince me that we don't need safety nets to help those who don't fare well in the capitalist system that we have.

Anyway, kind of a related topic next -
"On the other hand, many things you hear about Greece just aren't true.  The Greeks aren't lazy - on the contrary, they work longer hours than almost anyone else in Europe, and much longer hours than the Germans in particular.  Nor does Greece have a runaway welfare state, as conservative like to claim; social expenditure a percentage of gross domestic product, is substantially lower in Greece than in, say, Sweden or Germany, countries that have so far weathered the European crisis pretty well."  Paul Krugman (from today's newspaper, internet link to column not available yet)

How event turing is the Syrian shoot-down of a Turkish fighter jet?

is this a dractic turn of events, is it bad tactics of Syrian officials, or is tactics throwen out of the window?

I don't want to.  I have no problem with safety nets- I have a problem with them being set up by bureaucrats.

And that contradicts Krugman's points, how?

No I was just adding facts to your rather baseless observation that Greece is far harder-working than Germany. If German taxpayers are not crazy about bailing out early-retiring Greeks I can understand. Also, early and high retirement age and payments seem to me important in terms of social welfare expenditure. Just that.

I was quoting Paul Krugman and that was his observation.  You blew off his observations because it doesn't fit what you've been told.
