I'd put it somewhere in the top half...but that might change in a month or two once the excitement of it being not bad at all has worn off.

an interesting project.
I've  found that when a new Rush album is released I  can go back and listen to an older one that hadn't quite licked and which suddenly makes sense as bridge between styles.
Hold Your Fire was like that for me  - I really liked Power Windows, didn't find HYF all that interesting but loved Presto and then rediscovered and enjoyed HYF much better second time around.

This got to be one of the most chuggy sounding album by Rush, the riffs in BU2B album mix are quite heavy... I don't recall hearing Rush doing these kind of riffs too often.
All in all... I loved 'Clockwork Angels', although I'm not too found on the sound mixing, in most of the songs it sounds just too messy, but in tracks like the album namesake and The Garden, the production is almost crystal clear.

Yes, it is unfortunate the mix is muddy/bassy. I did some remixing in Adobe Audition and it helped a lot if the bass is lowered and the mid highs are elevated.

CWA DR=8, however it really doesn't clip that much.  it's just a sh*tty, lifeless mix and master.  it's so sad because it really gets in the way of the music.  it just sounds like they're playing behind a glass wall and everything is turned all the way up while neil sits in the back playing a tiny drum set.  some really good songs though.  i de-clipped it which helped with listening fatigue.

I have listened to the album five times now and I think it is one of the best albums the band has released.  I own all of the studio albums (including the Feedback EP) and all of the live albums with the exception of 'Time Machine: Live in Cleveland'.  So, I am not making this claim lightly.

I like the beefy production.  I don't think the detail in sound is sacrificed, but I guess it depends what you are listening to the album on.  I much prefer this kind of production to that on......say..'Roll the Bones', which to my ears sounds a little thin.

Obviously sound preference is very much a subjective thing and for me 'Clockwork Angels' sounds just great!

Sorry lads, I found this new one to be uninspired.  Was really looking forward to it to.  Certainly not a bad album, but not one I can see returning to after a few more listens.

Seriously? With that horrid production? Hemispheres is the pinnacle Rush release with me as well but VT is near the bottom these days. I started liking it when I heard it in bits and pieces, but I simply can not sit down and listen to the entire thing.

The production is bad, sure, but the compositions and performances are amazing.  Hell, the production of Nursery Cryme is atrocious, but people seem like it just fine.

In this day and age, there is no excuse for poor production, especially from a band that has been around for decades, IMO. I do not find most VT compositions to be anything great, or even melodic. How It Is and One Little Victory are my favorites but the rest of the CD is mostly dogs, maybe better than Dog Years. Wink

Well I like "Dog Years."  Tongue

Yes. One of my favourite 90's Rush tracks. Gets a lot of hate I noticed.
Lyrically it is cringe inducing, but musically it is a good song.

You are on the money with that! Clap

I'm enjoying the new album, but I have to say that as a concept, it completely misses me. The story doesn't interest me in the slightest and I can't drum up the enthusiasm to follow it or think about it.

My second listen was better.  Just listening to the album in the car and not reading the lyrics or paying that close of attention to them.

Its a good sign for a band that people can like different aspects of their music :) many bands don't have those.
I generally like the melodic, guitar oriented tracks but it can be anything from a riff/solo from Alex, a great bass lick, a drum part or a lyric that piques my interest and draws me in to embrace a song
