...and that makes it overrated?

No matter, overrated/underrated, it's all a bit silly anyway.

OK It's not overrated. I don't care. I don't likr it and loads of people seem to love it. That is the situation.

Overrated implies some sort of objective criteria for judging albums (i.e. people like it way more than any reasonable person should).  Of course, I do feel that way about rap and country music.  Still, when discussing music, we are invariably talking about subjective tastes and therefore, the term overrated is incorrect.  Still, as long as one keeps the subjectivity of tastes in music in mind, using the term overrated is perhaps not so bad.

By the way, the Beatles?  Underrated.  Shocked

That's quite simple: "Everyone likes it more than it deserves."

It is perfectly possible to a huge fan of something and admit that it is overrated, just as one can find an album unenjoyable while recognizing it merits the approval it has received.

If album A has a 4.52 average rating and I rate it a three, I have effectively said, "This album is overrated."

If album B has a 2.37 average rating and I rate it a four, I have effectively said, "This album is underrated."

This is pretty relevant.

Perhaps appreciation for something, gives use the "right" to criticize it's overblown praise?

How do you interpret "Everyone likes it more than it deserves" ? "Everyone is not being honest with himself and does not genuinely like the album so much" or "Too many people love it" ?

I think if one doesn't like something at all then you simply cannot call that thing overrated. The fact is that you don't like it wich is an entirely diferent thing. I have come to the conclusion that you can only call something overrated if you are a fan of that artist or genre. For example, A Prog Metal fan can say that he thinks Symphony X is overrated. It would be nonsense for a fan of only seventies Prog to say that. Or, a Dream Theater fan could say that Images and Words is a bit overrated.
