I haven't had many encounters with prog in public.  But when I was younger, we would go out to eat at this local bar/restaurant that had an old school jukebox.  I was probably 10 years old, but I would ask my dad for a few bucks so I could put on the only album I knew in there, Wish You Were Here.  This bar, Trenney's, gets a fairly rugged or hoopy crowd of proles, but when the first chord of Shine On began to sound throughout the smokey room, there was a tangible vibe that cut through the stale air, amidst some looks of incredulity.  I would then happily play racecar driving games with the rest of my dad's quarters whilst listening to the music he brought me up to love.

Good point haha, but I figured it'd be an interesting anecdote.  Also, all that reminiscing made me nostalgic for some Floyd, so I had to throw on Wish You Were Here, which (I'm bragging) I found at a yard sale yesterday for 2 bucks on vinyl.  Score!

Two unexpected proto-prog moments involving bars:

My friends and I walked into a cheap little dive and Revolution #9 was playing (about two minutes in). A notable amount of borderline drunk regulars seemed visibly upset, with the combination of the noisiness of the bar and the cacophonous music creating this immense din. I could not stop laughing, even after the "tune" finally ended.

Two nights ago at a more posh bar, in-between an Elton John song and a Police song they played "Sparks" off of The Who's Tommy. Being an instrumental interlude, I thought it was a weird selection to play at such a trendy place, let alone in general.

I also recall, when I worked at Kmart, hearing several prog tracks come on the store-wide radio from time to time.  I distinctly remember Aqualung, Wish You Were Here and Karn Evil 9 2nd Impression, along with some mixed 70's rock songs coming on later in the night when there weren't many customers about.  Needless to say, the few gems I heard made my night.  I could be seen air guitaring Ian Barre licks in the toilet paper isle.  Nonetheless I hated that job haha.  Most of the time I had my headphones in, listening to Genesis while ringing up customers garbage.  I had long hair, which made it possible to have headphones in at any time without being caught.

Only that thing really jumps out has to be the strangest one.

At a supermarket (it was later at night) I heard a song from "Crack the Skye" by Mastodon playing.

In the fast food of the Rainbow Magicland park near Rome I've hear Shine on You Crazy Diamond. I thought that one of the workers had good musical tastes, but later I realized that it was one of the poorest local commercial radios. This was really unexpected.

Speaking of Shine On. I just heard a clip from it being played for a break to commercial on the fox news show the Five. I was pleasantly suprised as i am couch-ridden after having my wisdom teeth removed.

At school, after a day of teaching I was asked to go through some old archives boxes in music room and throw out what I didn't want. I was going through an old box of music sheets that were gathering dust and found amongst some old show tunes, music sheets for  Yes' Owner of a Lonely Heart, and Rush's 'Limelight', oh and Wish You were here' by PF - Stairway to Heaven by LZ, needless to say they are now sitting in my living room!


I also found Janis Joplin Me and Bobby Mcgee and Chain of Fools and an old JOhnny Cash Walk the Line music sheet. Cant believe they were all to be thrown out!
