Maybe it's my personal taste, but I don't like them much. As for influence, I think that King Crimson did a better job spreading prog rock

How is this, Abacab, or genesis or Calling all Stations overrated?

Not overrated, at least not those. You know what I am talking about: The "Golden Era". They have 2 albums in the top 10, yet I do not think that they are really deserving of that. Top 100? Maybe. I say this because it's just prog rock, they're no changing anything, just going with their formula. At least King Crimson Changed it up every 5 years. Not to say that the formula was bad, just bland.

I certainly do not know what you are talking about. How am i supposed to know what you mean by "most/all"? Say what you mean and there is no misunderstanding. BTW didn't genesis change how they did things?

I guess they did change things, but I guess what I'm saying is that they didn't necessarily innovate, so their sound is very definitive, and it is my opinion that a band should try to change their sound. This is one of the reasons why I believe that the 70s albums of Genesis are overrated.

Selling England by the Pound - two brilliant songs, the rest is pretty average Genesis stuff.

Close to the Edge - great album, but nowhere near as great as Relayer.

Dark Side of the Moon - one of the least interesting Floyd albums. The production is flawless (even a bit too flawless), but The Great Gig in the Sky is the only song on the album that shows some originality.

You say King Crimson changed it up every five years or so, well the golden era with Peter Gabriel only lasted five years, and Trespass is vastly different from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Trick of the Tail which came out just after that golden period is often cited as the first neo-prog album, though that is sometimes disputed, and was also a big change between one album in my opinion.

I must say that I was rather enjoying the discussion rogerthat and Saperlipopette! were having, before the thread turned into a mere snipe at Genesis. How did it become so fashionable to bash this band here on PA?
Because a large portion of bands still are emulating them - or because of the fact that people are jealous of Peter Gabriel's ability to wear costumes?

I think it's due to their crossover appeal and fair bit of quaintness. Makes them the easiest target of the classic bands.
I've always cherished both of those qualities.

ELP are the easiest target but they aren't rated as highly so there seems to be less claims they are overrated. On the other hand Genesis have a huge following here.

1. Genesis - And Then There Were Three
2. Kansas - Point of Know Return
3. ELP - Works 1
4. Yes - Tormato

(Yes - there is a pattern here...)

I think the record holder on this site for being over-rated is Maudlin of the Well. I mean, seriously, do they have a single fan who's willing to step back and say "maybe this isn't worth 5 stars...maybe I shouldn't recommend them to everybody on every single forum thread?"

I have heard Rush's latest, and I  think it quite probably rather "overrated" at PA''s Clockworks Angels album page, especially since it's such a recent release.  It has 92 ratings with an average of 4.35.  That's a very high rating and many ratings for an album that is no new (hardly unprecedented, mind you).  I didn't think that highly of it on first spin, though it seems pretty good (not really my taste), and I wonder if those people will think as highly of it in a few years (if it will stand the test of time for them).  I expect the average rating value to drop as more review and rate it over time.

I counted two there that he gave 3 stars.

But he gave Univers Zero's Clivages and Xing Sa's Creation de l'Univers one star.  A clear case of anti-universism. ;)

Yes, not a very relevant comment of mine.

Clearly ridiculous.
