I'm not a drummer myself but my experience in a band confirms that indeed the cymbals are the key. You can have a cheap set of drums and they may sound still decent if well tuned, their weakness will be long-term durability, quality of the metal hardware etc, but these are things that you can replace one by one as they break and improve bit by bit with time whenever you can afford spending a bit of money, including replacing the heads by better ones.
With the cymbals it's different, cheap cymbals sound cheap and there's no way you can improve that bit by bit.

Alright thank you everyone. Basically, most of the things I have read say to buy used for my first drumset. So I have been looking on craigslist and there are some really good deals on there. I am way too excited!

Amen to the craigslist suggestion. As with most things your first purchase should be cheap as possible. When you are not an expert in a given area you will most likely not make good buying decisions despite whatever advice you may get. It doesn't matter what you get untill you have an idea of what you like. Your first set will be just a learning experience. my 2 cents.

One that you find on craigslist or maybe a Drum/Guitar center. If it's your first set, don't get a new one unless it's a good deal.

I'm still using a cheap kit that I record with, and lug around to gigs. It's the cymbals that matter most, the rest can be made better by a bit of electrical tape and tuning up. So I'd suggest maybe getting a set of Sabian Solars or B8s (I still use some B8s, the hi-hats in particular are great for the price), or Zildjian ZBTs. Hope that helps you out. |
