The "review" by Tony Fisher should be deleted - it's not a review of the album at all. The other two do actually bother to talk about the music. |

I don't know, but something don't seem right about these two critters: STYX - Cornerstone (1979) — WTF? Why is this album on this web site? It's NOT prog, in the same way that Britney Spears isn't prog. This album is AOR. And it's really bad AOR at that. If you want to sample Styx at its peak, check out Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. If you want good AOR, stick to Boston's first two albums, Foreigner's debut and Head Games, and Kansas albums like Point of Know Return. But no matter what you're looking for, avoid this terrible album, which was really only suitable for teens growing up in the Midwest in the late 70s and wearing big hair.
STYX - Paradise Theater (1981)
Review by Kirk Lott @ 8:05:05 PM EST, 5/30/2005 — First, this isn't prog, so I don't know why it's on this web site. But no mattter what you're looking for, avoid this terrible album, which was really only suitable for teens growing up in the Midwest in the early 80s and wearing big hair.

BANKS, TONY - A Curious Feeling (1979)
Review by jack torse @ 11:32:05 AM EST, 6/2/2005 — unfortunately this piece of garbage has had too many good reviews and now its time to let you people in on something, -i have to be a bit careful what I say because you can't be too honest on this message board or else its not allowed up. Seriously though, come on! tony banks! I can only describe him as a proper public schoolboy snob who's music is dull and blande.
Another forum post.
Nothing at all about the album.
DESTROY!!!

MARS VOLTA, THE - Frances The Mute (2005)
Review by Tim @ 8:38:52 PM EST, 6/1/2005 — Well the Mars Volta fan boys are out in force and I can only shake my head in bewilderment and some sadness. How can such a poor bunch of songs, always in minor keys, capped by a singer whose whining and mewling brings to mind Placebo on steroids, be rated as a masterpiece? Those who have rated it as such surely do not know much of what happened pre-1985 when it seems they must have been born. Effects and production are here substituted for music and virtuosity is valued only as a claim to 'prog' legitimacy rather than actually serving any real musical purpose. Perhaps this is an appropriate metaphor for our age - where form triumphs over substance. Sweet wet dreams, fan boys. Sad. If I could give this '-1000' stars I would...... PS - The fact that this lame band features on this site yet genuine progressives the Residents are nowhere to be seen puts it to shame.
Although "Tim" vaguely hints at the album, he does not discuss it or validate his opinion. He also goes off at tangents which I feel are unnecessary.
Bad Tim

NIGHTWISH - Once (2004)
Review (Permanent link) by Bushvictim @ 3:47:59 AM EST, 6/8/2005 — I have never heard of the band or their music. I was wondering about the meaning of the image on the cover. I am surprised that (I believe) no one has commented on it. It appears that an angle who has sinned "once", is forced to pay the price for it, but I am likely in left field on this. Comments?

These Dream Theater reviews are wholly inappropriate for this site, IMO - they say nothing at all about the music, apart from "good", - they are just extreme fanboy reviews - the 2nd one even says it "Nothing else to say" - well why say ANYTHING??? Why clog up the archives with useless things like this ; (or is it just me... ) DREAM THEATER Octavarium Review (Permanent link) by Agustin de Jonge @ 3:13:34 PM EST, 6/7/2005 — exellent!!! nothing else to say Great album!! It one of their best... the first time i heard Octavarium, a huge smile appeared on my face, and i almost break down into tears Rudess, Portnoy, John, John and James, thnxs a lot!! Trapped inside this octavarium, I´am paralysed so afraid to die... FANTASTIC. ... ... ... ...
Review (Permanent link) by Pato Mtz @ 4:53:37 PM EST, 6/7/2005
— I´ve heard this album since like two weeks! I downloaded from a torrent I've heard it like 20 times the complete album , I just dislike I walk beside you, I know that DT was trying to make something different, but...this??? Any was the whole album deserves a very good place in the progressive history! specially the soong OCTAVARIUM, to every DT listener when they hear "20-min epic son" the first thing that come to the mind is a change of seasons! But this is a whole difference thing! the instrumental part is just simply amazing! and the mike back vocals sound very very amazing. 13:49-15:49 (from "Octavarium" song) is the very best part of ALL THE DREAM THEATER HISTORY. All the rest is just, incredible specially "Octavarium".
DREAM THEATER Octavarium
Review (Permanent link) by maximus langelier @ 5:15:30 PM EST, 6/7/2005 — this is a master piece album.its just so GREATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.the musician or great john petrucci lead guitar is incredible.the solo and the lyrics are so crazy.i love dream theater its my favorite music group and its very good .the drum is good tere is is very good its the best progressive metal group so listen to this cd you will have a good time and buy it little guy and long guy
Review (Permanent link) by Mike @ 9:49:55 PM EST, 6/7/2005 — I will keep this short and sweet. Many of the reviews on this page hit on all the important facts. I think the most important thing to realize about this album is that it is different from previous DT efforts. Unlike SOME other DT material, a non-musician can pick up this CD and really get into the music and melodies. Labrie is excellent, even moreso than on some of the other albums. Myung's bass playing is more of a focus this time around. He sounds great. And as always, Petrucci and Portnoy's contribution is nothing short of amazing. The only dissapointment that I find with my purchase is that it does not come with media "extras", as with TOT. I enjoy "The Making Of" and what have you. Regardless, go buy this album!!!!
— I agree with most of the things said in the past reviews: Great Album, the title-track by itself is a masterpiece and deserve 5 stars for sure, the sound is not good sometimes and is a different album like each and every album made by Dream Theater. Great Job again and great comeback to real prog music.
Review (Permanent link) by Mike @ 10:06:58 PM EST, 6/7/2005 — Totally awesome album from beginning to end!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fact that it begins like ToT ends, AND it ends the same way (just like the words in Octavarium say).... an AWESOME effect. By the way, what the heck is an "Octavarium"? Is it the contraption on the cover, with the 8 balls (hence the "octa")? Review (Permanent link) by Mori @ 10:22:02 PM EST, 6/7/2005 — I don't want to babble on how good Octavarium is and sound like a Dream Theater fan boy but I do want to stress out how incredibly solid the band is on this album. James LaBrie sounds better than on any other album he has ever been on, wether it be on DT, MullMuzzler, Solo, etc. What used to be considered the weakest link of DT is definately not anymore. John Petrucci takes a backseat on this album which is kind of nice but don't be fooled, his performance is great as usual. Jordan Rudess definately left his mark on this CD as his influences can be traced all over the place. Next is John Myung, being a bassist myself I was always dissapointed on how low he was in the mix being the awesome bassist that he is but, I can finally hear him and his influence is also strongly felt in this album. Then there is Mike Portnoy, what else can I say that hasn't been said about this workaholic? Like always Portnoy delivers and then some. Octavarium is good enough to satisfy the more demanding DT fans as well as to the most skeptical. Of course there will be many people that disagree with me on my opinions about the band and Octavarium and I accept that but, there will also be many people who'll tell you that this CD is garbage based on how "prog" it is to bash Dream Theater.
My bad for being a hypocrite by babbling on about how good Octavarium is and sounding like a DT fanboy but it is very hard not to when you enjoy the album as much as I have been. Review (Permanent link) by Landon @ 10:37:09 PM EST, 6/7/2005 — It's hard to get a band so high, and continue then it's legacy. But doesn't seem a problem for Dream Theater, they still can make essential albums and this one's not an exception. And they had it really hard, with albums like "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" or "Metropolis part II" that put the set too high to surpass. "Octavarium" whitout being so conceptual, gets that highness. Go for it and support a band who really deserve support.

DREAM THEATER - Octavarium (2005)
Review (Permanent link) by Javier @ 1:34:02 PM EST, 6/8/2005 — I don´t like to insult people, but someone like "Giorgio" that download the album from the internet, and the cd that he really listened to was Elements of Persuasion and give here an opinion its a ******...I say this because the new Dream theater album it doesn´t has any new metal things, it´s really a prog album with some metal songs, that because it is Progressive metal..well...please...to review an album, listen to the correct album.
When you review an album, please actually review it.

Just because he says he isn't a fanboy, that doesn't stop this from not being a review - he even says that he cannot even comment on the album - why bother??? Review by GentleGiant — I am not a Dream Theater fan at all. But trust me, this is a MASTERPIECE !!
I cannot even comment on this particular album. All I can say is, go and get it! Unlike other reviewers, I will even recommend this album to devils who live in hell if they really exist! Get it and be happy DT fan! Thank you. :) Just to prove I'm not biased, here's a nonsensical negative one;
Review by Indor Gamez 4:34:41 PM EST, 6/10/2005 — WARNING!
Only for the deaf (read: fan)!! They try to sound like the old classic bands and just dragging them in the dirt. I can't say anything good about it and if I could rate it lower than this i would do that. I have read all the other reviews and they are far out, it's like i've heard another crappy album and they heard a solid five star one. I have also heard all their albums and their all bad but this is so crappy I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy! If you got to have this then download it somewhere! (yes it is that bad!). And another fanboy one;
Review by David 12:26:19 PM EST, 6/10/2005 — Wow. Wow. Wow.
What else is there to say? One could go and describe each and every track (as most have done) and thouroughly explain what makes this album so wonderful. As you guys seem to have handled that enough, I'll just put in my own $0.02. This album is one of the best new releases we will see in years. If not more. There are virtually no flaws, from the first F natural to the last. Apart from SFAM, never have I been taken on more of an emotional musical roller coaster. This album covers everything. Everything. I know, I may be read as "just another fanboy", but seriously people. This CD will blow your head off, be it the killer riffs in "The Root of All Evil" or the majestic finale of "Ovtavarium: V. The Razor's Edge", you will never feel so alive, so enthralled by one album. Edited by Certif1ed |

GENESIS Trespass
Review (Permanent link) by Lethe @ 7:32:05 PM EST, 4/1/2004 SPECIAL COLLABORATION
— Another remarkable and unforgettable album by the early GENESIS,
even though the production was quite weak at that time. It never minds
because it contains almost the whole classics of the band, such as the
famous suite "Supper's Ready", the underrated and surprising
"Can'Utility and the Coastliners" or the famous unplugged instrumental
number by Steve HACKETT "Horizon". Another important work!!

Another worthless Octavarium review: DREAM THEATER - Octavarium (2005) — Dream Theater is my favorate band, and I really rock out to their music, but I was a little disappointed when I listened to the new octavarium cd about an hour ago. As soon as track 8 was over I had to stick in the scenes from a memory cd and ... Full review
The writer says nothing about the album, just that they attempted to return to a more contemporary style and it failed.
