Defending Your Life

Albert Brooks' clever and dryly funny tale of the evaluation everyone is given just after death where they either move on in the universe or get sent back to an earthly life.  Rip Torn is brilliant as Brooks' defender and Meryl Streep his perfect-in-every-way love interest.  Probably Brooks' best film.

Pina by Wim Wenders

My first Wenders film, probably not the best to introduce myself to this famous director, right?
It was interesting, what more can I say? It's a documentary done in an original manner about one extremely impressive choreographer, Pina Bausch. The performances that are shown are just unbelievable, most very abstract, there's very few spoken word from some of the performers, no more. Lots of different types of music carry the movie along.
If you're fan or want to introduce yourself to Pina Bausch, this is a great way.

Abrazos Rotos by Pedro Almodóvar

My first Almodovar film, and it was perfect for making me more curious about this spanish director. Very modern way of telling a story, where's there's actually two or almost three, and it's not really confusing, just sufficiently to mantain you on the seat the entire movie concentrated.
Highly recommended.

Prometheus.
Incredible movie though not perfect. Raises some interesting questions.
The visuals and graphics were superior. I happen to actual like the soundtrack and the main theme song correlates well to the theme of origins in my mind.

Mission:Impossible-Ghost Protocol

Tom Cruise's ongoing adaption of the classic and incredibly dull TV show has always been about one absurd scenario after another, and believability is rarely on the menu.  In that context, this fourth entry is as good or better than the last two.  But it's no Bond.  Or Jason Bourne for that matter.  But it is fun and Simon Pegg is the best thing in the film, providing much needed humor and humanity as a bumbling new IMF agent.  Good mediocre escapism.

Great film, one of my favorites; Washington is excellent as Biko, ably supported by Kevin Kline - I know what you mean about the split personality of the film, though - it's virtually 2 films in one - the beginning about the 2 mens' relationship & Biko's struggle & the second part about the journalist trying to escape from SA with his family.

This film affects me as much now as when I 1st saw it 24 years ago, a definite

This is what film making is about; a tight, well told story with great actors - I defy anyone not to become hooked within 5 minutes (if they get over a shocking scene 90 seconds in, that is).

An alcoholic in self destruct mode (Peter Mullen) meets & is befriended by a christian charity shop worker (Olivier Colman) only to find her life is not quite so comfortable as it may seem from the outside - although Mullen & Colman are stunning, the standout performance for me is without a doubt Eddie Marsan as the husband, Marsan, to my mind is one of the most under-appreciated actors around in Britain at the moment & well worth seeing.

This is not a nice film, this is in many places brutal & shocking, in others surprisingly funny, but I'd say one of the best films I've seen in quite a while.

Character development rushed. Some puzzling reveals that were unnecessary (some would argue at the expense of reveals that were necessary but never occurred). But still overall fantastic movie with great visuals.

Prometheus

I know, I know, the film left many questions unanswered and even raised more questions. But I still loved it. Why? Because of just that! I love sci-fi that gets you thinking and flicks the imagination switch into full mode. People seem to forget that in 1968 there was particular sci-fi film that just boggled the minds of everybody that breathed and left a zillion unanswered questions. Well, that film has gone down as one of the most groundbreaking and influential films of all time despite it being poorly recieved on it's initial release. Of course I'm talking about Stan-the-Man's 2001: A Space Odyssey. And let's not forget Scott's own Bladerunner that certainly caused some heads to be scratched. Sci-fi is suppose to be mysterious and imaginative. If you walked out of the theater trying to put together your own interpretation of the film, then Ridley Scott, your mission is complete. Bravo!

Turn-ons: some humor, ... the presence of the hot Cobie Smulders, and ... that's it!
Turn-offs: cheesy talk (which means filler), the lack of true depth on all levels, and ... that's it!

Rating: ** / ****

That's odd. You go to a superhero movie with all that entails. You know  what to expect. You watch probably the greatest superhero movie ever. And then say it's not very good. I truly don't know what you expected. Brilliant film.

I mean, when you see the trailers, ... s%^t! ... You pretty much saw the entire film. The rest, in general, is just not attractive. One idea stretched for about over 2 hours. It's mostly hype and action.

Sorry if I wasn't very clear about that. For the gazzillionth time, we all look for different things. I guess you have to be a Marvel comic book fan or just a sci-fi fan to be able to fully appreciate this film.

I watched Dolls last night, and I thought it was incredible. It is a movie of three separate love stories directed by the famous Takeshi Kitano that basically show how painful true love can be. The acting is superb and the photography is beautiful. The three story lines that subtly cross paths, but remain separate for the most part, are very quiet but still emotionally gripping. I recommend it to everyone who likes artsy films and love stories.

How's this for a bad day at work (note, this is not a spoiler per se, as this is a matter of public record)?

Being your country's leading & most sought after hangman & one morning, having to hang your best friend...?

Stunning film

^ Just did a bit of a research on that. Legal capital punishment in Britain in 19th-20th centuries? Dead

The last person to be hanged in England was as recently as 1964, soon before capital punishment was abolished; the penalty was still on the statute books until 1998 though, for offenses such as treason - this was finally abolished for good, though.

Even though there are regular knee-jerk-reaction calls for its reinstatement I believe the UK would be barred from bringing it back by civil rights legislation whilst we remain a part of the EU

Not yet - really looking forward to doing so, though...

Difficult to go to the cinema with my wife, as she's a born again dormouse; comfy seats, warm room, darkness & she's asleep
