Rashomon by Kurosawa

Very interesting idea, the acting of the thief is top-notch, insane as hell. The ending also, great.

El Hombre de al Lado by Gaston Duprat

Loved it. Very minimalistic in plot and setting, reminded me a lot to Medianeras. Some hilarious parts.

Mirror by Tarkovsky

Ok. What? No idea what was it about, I'm confused as hell. (even if I read that it's actually meant to have no plot)

Palm Springs Weekend

Essential early '60s teenage romp and a low in Hollywood moviemaking, Palm Springs Weekend is comfortably trashy and supremely idiotic with a cast of aging actors portraying college kids during spring break.   Though bad on almost every level, the film is a marvel of garish Technicolor, depraved Americana, and teenploitation.   Awful, and a must-see.

An above average family film, but average otherwise.

The Iron Lady

Sensitive portrait of Ms. Thatcher told in retrospect from her point of view in her later years.   Meryl Streep is typically exceptional and the script is beautifully written, startling at times as Thatcher observes her whole life splayed out in front of her on TV, through visions and lost memories, and the film illustrates nicely how the individual human struggle is more powerful than politics.   Not the best movie in the world but first-rate entertainment.

Pierrot Le Fou by Godard

Great stuff. It has a slightly more complex narrative than the other Godard movies I've watched, but it continues to fascinate me with its totally unique ideas.

Hoop Dreams

The 1994 doc that follows two inner-city teen basketball prodigies is still immensely pleasurable and insightful, and applies just as well to today's school sports programs as eighteen years ago.   The paradox of being talented in a valued field only to be thrust into a world where those talents are commonplace is no better explored than in the slowly unfolding dramas played-out here, and Hoop Dreams screams for a follow-up film on contemporary high school/college sports.   True storytelling at its best.

Blue Velvet by David Lynch

Dark. I was constantly waiting to be totally "scared", but fortunately that never happened. Now, it's a good plot and it's an original way of telling it, but not sure if I like the whole Lynch-mentality. This is only my second Lynch movie though, the other being Elephant Man which I liked but wouldn't watch again, i think.

The Avengers:

Not bad, but not very good either. I was actually expecting something that would just stump me, but I wasn't stumped after all. So, out with the expectations!
Turn-ons: some humor, ... the presence of the hot Cobie Smulders, and ... that's it!
Turn-offs: cheesy talk (which means filler), the lack of true depth on all levels, and ... that's it!

Rating: ** / ****

Cry Freedom:

More than just a movie about the friendship of a British writer and a South-African activist, it's also a suspense film. Good for a very brief account of what Steve Biko was about, very good for a suspense film. When you juxtapose the two, you might be confused about the purpose of the film. Is it underscoring the racial tensions or is it actually serving as a vehicle for the suspense and the pretext for that suspense? I think the former makes more sense. "This is what the writer was doing, and this is what his family had to go through."

Rating: *** / ****

Jason and the Argonauts

The smashing 1963 version is a gem of the matinée era with Ray Harryhausen's visuals and a very human Jason & crew on an epic quest as they clash with Talos the man of bronze, the Hydra, and a legendary army of skeletons.  The most intelligent of the myth-based thrillers in the early '60s and stands up to the years beautifully.

I just watched that last night. I wasn't expecting to be scared. I actually got what I expected. I'd seen Eraserhead (which I loved) and Dune (which I loathed) beforehand.

To me, Blue Velvet was just meaningful and serious enough to be taken as a mature and daring film while being just psychotic and confounding enough to leave me with an uneasy air of strangeness. B+

Beneath The Planet Of The Apes-5 stars

Just as good as the first movie (and that is saying something!) Even though i have seen it before, it still kept me glued to the screen all the way through-exciting and suspenseful all the way along

Meet Joe Black

As manipulative as it is, the quiet moments and unhurried pace of this sentimental fable are effective and we sympathize with Anthony Hopkins' character as he approaches his premature demise and a personified Death falls for his daughter.   Romance with a touch of myth, the movie brings some originality to the tearjerker format.

That's odd. You go to a superhero movie with all that entails. You know  what to expect. You watch probably the greatest superhero movie ever. And then say it's not very good. I truly don't know what you expected. Brilliant film.

John Carter

Considering how fast this thing sunk at the boxoffice, I wasn't expecting much.  To my shock, for pulp fantasy it ain't bad.  Predating Conan and many other fantasy staples, E.R. Burrough's series is reasonably adapted here by Disney and Taylor Kitsch is good as Carter, a displaced Civil War soldier who finds himself in the middle of a Martian war.  Reminiscent of Stargate but better, and of Escape From New York but not as good.

I agree that was a solid movie I enjoyed. Shame that is flopped, poor marketing by Disney did not help.

So last night I watched Alien with a friend in anticipation for the midnight premier of Prometheus tonight.
One thing I noticed was how much the lighting added to the depth of the set design in the movie. I'm referring mostly to the ending scene where Ripley is running through the Nostromo escaping right before it self destructs. The flashing alarms, strobe lights, and steam effects added so much and made those scenes so intense and memorable. And that one part where the strobe lights flashes and the xenomorph is like right there close to Ripley. So sweet!

In the last 2 days I finally watched some "classics" that I was ashamed of not having watched, or at least, people were shocked to know that.

El Secreto de Sus Ojos by Campanella
Another notable film by Argentina. Big budget, kind-of tricky plot, top-notch actors, fun and mysterious story, excellent.

Pulp Fiction by Tarantino
I really didn't know what to expect, I had watched some parts and had heard of others, but that was just meaningless. Like always, fab dialogues, interesting plots and how they are presented and mixed. Great.

Into the Wild by Sean Penn
This one, I did know what it was all about, I just wanted to watch it all from start to finish. Although I didn't like some of the camera work, too many images for just one scene, it's very well made and it doesn't tire. Moving, although I was surprised I didn't cry, I usually am very sensible for movies.

Dark Shadows:  Pretty decent rendition, for what they could do with a long running soap opera in just under 2 hours, until the Hollywood ending.  Wish they'd done it a bit more subtle than that.  On the other hand, Eva Green.  Pig  3 stars.

Memento:  Awesome if you don't mind watching a movie from end to beginning.  Twisted plot, if a little predictable in parts.  I knew she was a bad guy from the beginning (the end).  Could have made the end (the beginning) even more twisted had they wanted to, but as it stood, pretty cool.  4 stars.

On Her Majesty's Secret Cervix...oh, wait.  Forget that one.  But still, 5 stars.

This and Conquest are actually my favorites of the series.

Safe House

Exceedingly tight and tense action/suspense has Denzel Washington as a veteran superspy thrown together with a young CIA 'housekeeper' well-played by Ryan Reynolds as they evade all number of assassins gunning for Washington.   Sam Shepard perfectly cast as a CIA station chief.   In a Bourne Identity vein but superior, more direct, and rarely stops moving in interesting directions.
