Good luck. I was told "Prog Reviewer" status came about "more or less automatically" after a certain number of reviews...doesn't seem to be the case.... |

With all respect, openly stating that you purposefully break the guidelines of the rating system and/or manipulate ratings is probably not the way to be promoted. Why would we give extra weighting to someone who gets off on breaking the site ratings guidelines? Not that I have any say in who gets promoted. Just an observation from a fellow member. |

Collaborator and Prog reviewer are two different things. I write reviews too randomly to be a PR. But I'm always willing to help make the site better by updating album/band pages, etc. |

Jeez, you took that overly seriously. I will have you know I give 5's out to albums I actually love. I just happen to love music more often than most people, apparently. I find it a little annoying, actually, when I come across these people who only give out 1 five star review in, say, a hundred, because they feel it's SUPPOSED to be rare. EVERY album on this site has a few 5 star ratings. So if I love something, I want it to do well, I want it to get attention, etc., I'm giving it a 5. It's not manipulation - manipulation is when someone goes in and gives every album by one artist a 1 star rating. Did you seriously listen to every album after finding out you loathed the artist? Hey, if they don't want to give me Prog Reviewer status, it's their loss - apparently some people thing my writing is good enough as I'm now being published on a site where they DON'T just let anyone who wants post reviews on their site. It would be nice if they did give me the status here, but I'm not gonna fight for it now. |

Haha, thanks for picking up on that one. I double check and triple check a bit better before I send my reviews in to the publisher at the site I'm talking about. I assume they check my work before posting it, but since I'm not positive on that one I make triple sure it's good. |

Well, be annoyed then, because yes, it is supposed to be rare. For good reason. The fact that you give everything you like 5 star masterpiece, and that you admit to over/under rating to exact some justice in what you perceive good music to be, is ridiculous. Your ratings list is a direct affront to the site's wishes/guidelines. Look at it. You may be a good writer and that's great. But your ratings should not be given extra weighting via Prog Reviewer status because of your refusal to at least attempt to play by the rules. If I'm misrepresenting your ratings approach, correct me, but this is what I recall of your own words about ratings in a past thread. I have nothing against you personally, I just have a problem with ratings abuse. |

Yup, Finnforest, you just confirmed it for me: people on MMA are WAY cooler, and I don't really care what people's opinions of me here are.
My rating system is like a test grade: 5 stars is the 95-100 range 4.5 is 90-95 4 is a B 3 is a C 2 is a D 1 is an F You may think you're smart by never giving a 5 but the bands and fans find it insulting and in other areas of the net they are saying they don't like it here because people are snobby. Go ahead, say it's ignorant perception or whatever you wanna say. But I'm gonna follow my instincts for ratings and I really don't care if you say I haven't given out enough lows. I have plenty of low ratings to give, but it's not really worth my time. Edited by dtguitarfan - June 07 2012 at 21:17 |

Geoff, I never said I was smart or you were ignorant. I simply mentioned what you said in another thread about how you feel justified disregarding the site guidelines. No more and no less than that.
People can open up your ratings list and decide for themselves if you are ratings are appropriate, or even close, to the spirit of the site's guidelines (that 5s should be used sparingly) Last, what you wrote below would indicate that you give 5 stars to only the top 5% of albums. Nothing wrong with that, that's rare!! MMA people are cool and I'm not. Whatever. I'll live. Edited by Finnforest - June 07 2012 at 21:27 |

Have to say, I agree with Jim on this one. Not only do you seem on the offensive, Geoff, which isn't helping your case either, but your ratings don't seem to make much sense either. I'm a huge (HUGE) Dream Theater fan, but there's simply no way every one of their albums is 5 stars. Unless I missed one looking at your ratings, it seems like that's how you rated them.
Jim's right - 5 stars should be rare simply because overuse devalues it's weight. If 80 out of 100 albums are 5 stars, what happens when you find an album that's better than 1 of those 80? You're stuck, because they're no higher place to go. On the flip side, if you give 20 out of 100 albums 5 stars, it adds an extra umph to an album that gets 5 stars. I use 4 stars all the time, so when I give an album 5 stars, it makes it that much more special.

You could try bugging Ian (Snow Dog) to try to become a member of the Erros and Omissions team to update albums and such, but don't forget that I can't even update band pages.

Nope, if you looked closely you wouldn't seen: Chaos in Motion has 4 stars Live at the Marquee - 4 stars Once in a Livetime - 4 stars Train of Thought - 3 stars Falling into Infinity - 3 stars Dream Theater is my favorite band, and I would take ANY ONE of their albums over EVERY album of many other artists. But even I will not give every one of their albums 5 stars. |

I do. But you know what? I was told who to talk to about getting the Prog Reviewer status, and I sent 2 messages. The first one asked politely to be considered for the upgrade. The second one, sent 2 weeks later asked that if there was some reason I was not being promoted I be told what that was, and maybe I could work with it. Like I said - someone thinks my writing is good and is publishing me on a more exclusive site where people don't get to publish whatever they want whenever they want, so I feel that if PA doesn't think I'm good enough for them it's their loss. |

Amongst 6 active users online at MMA and 75 on PA currently, even a sad old husk of a man who smells of pee like myself would be on the cusp of cool on MMA. You say you don't care about people's opinions on PA yet your shrill indifference as to the merits of apportioning 5 star reviews or the unsubstantiated perception that PA is 'snobbish' smacks of disingenuous zeal. Why share your ratings evaluation criteria if you don't give a f*ck? You also appear to be the unofficial mouthpiece of many artists listed on PA and would have us believe they find PA raters 'insulting' by the dearth of 5 star reviews given out - please do tell when such private exposes were revealed to yourself (in the strictest confidence of course). I've only ever met two prog musicians (Arthur Brown and Fish) and neither gave a discarded fig about anyone who submitted any review of their work (amateur of professional) |

Not sure we need another member right now but if you are keen PM me. I can talk it out with the team, but we normally onlylike to recruit from current Collabs. So it would need the Admin Ok after we approve and if they had no objections...your in! BTW...I haven't noticed you regularly reporting errors.
