We spend a lot of time assuming that people want to be free. I don't think this is the case. People don't strive for freedom. I think many people prefer to have no freedom. We can't take it a priori that people desire and should desire liberty.

There's the old saying:

10% of the population want to lead
80% of the population are satisfied by having the basic human needs
10% of the population either want to lead or to follow

Might not be exactly true, but that's how I see the world's modern industrial society.

Look at animals. Some lead the pack, most just follow them.

Do you also remember how nice it was as a child to have all your needs taken care of, even if you didn't have the power to decide in a lot of matters?

That people don't want to be free stopped being a surprise like around 10000 bc.

This is from more a leftist organization, but I have to agree with the sentiment being expressed. You can see the government moving in this direction pretty rapidly since 9/11. Even peaceful dissenters, even those using nothing but words or non-violent organization, become more and more equated with the shadowy, violent terrorist lurking just outside your line of sight.

By the way, I think I've decided that unless there's some massive shift in Romney actually having good opinions, I'll be voting for Obama. It's not something I really want to do, but if it's looking like a dead heat kind of race, the basic fact is I would rather have a Democrat in the White House than a typical Republican. Sure Obama drone-kills civilians and all this other bullsh*t, but of course Romney will too. I just hate all the goddamn right wing rhetoric now, and I can't stand the contrarian attitude. And in the broader sense of what this thread is about, though Libertarians have practical ideas on a lot of things, I must ask myself, would I wish for the free-market utopia most preach about? No, I actually wouldn't. I want a reasonable income tax, reasonable safety net, government programs aimed at helping the poor, and a lot of other typically Democrat ideas. I'd just prefer sensibility with government. Hopefully we can collectively realize we're in a defense-gone-wild kinda funk as a nation, and curtail that soon without going off the deep end.

It doesn't have to be that way. The "war machine" problem in America is not just going to go away without addressing it head-on and realizing it's a problem. Libertarians as well as Democrats and Republicans need to get on board with this.

Nah I assume most of us accepted reality a while ago. At best a brokered convention was my hope though that's not going to happen either.
It doesn't really matter, it was such a longshot for the start...what's more important is the message. Sure it's been distorted by the media, idiots and anti Paul people but still, way more than even 2 years ago...

I still don't see the worry of being forced to choose between 2 sh*ts either...you can still write in who you want, or vote for Gary Johnson, I may do so.
