I love my SSD. I wish it were a tad bigger, but I can deal. I would only fill it with porn anyway

Played the open beta about a month ago. Go back a few pages and I'm sure you'll find my thoughts on it.

That game is on Unreal engine, isn't it? What's the combat like?

Yes, it is on the Unreal engine. Fine, I'll quote myself from last month:

Today, I tried the TERA open beta. In the end, TERA's combat is a lot like Phantasy Star Online, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, it's a bit slower (bad thing) and lacks the loot, being a Korean MMO with silly crafting systems and junk. It is also Korean MMO in a lot of other ways. The grind isn't so hot (probably put in 5 hours, got to all of level 13). Female characters... well, let's just say I made the ill-fated decision to roll a human female with a giant sword, and she now runs around in Daisy-Dukes and half-exposed double-Ds. *sigh* The game looks pretty good, with a vibrant color palette and some pretty pleasant views. Unfortunately, as soon as you get past the starting island, there's nobody to be found, and the large world really comes back to bite itself in the ass. Oh look, giant city! Too bad I've seen all of 3 people wanderings its streets. The "story" bits are also pretty goddamn awful, with a terrible script narrated by a guy who sounds like Bailey from the Mass Effect series.

Given that TERA is a buy-and-sub game, I think this one is a big fat "PASS".

If you want more depth, well, dodge-rolling has a cooldown, and you'll spend a lot of time mashing the same attack combinations (the game allows you to chain certain skills together for faster activation). As I remember, the classes were:

Archer: Sort of manual aim. Run around shooting things with terribly weak arrows. Didn't get very far as an Archer.

Berserker: Carry giant axe. Whack enemy. Repeat. Blocks instead of dodges. Slow as hell. Lot of charge-up attacks. Not very fun. The game is too slow already, and then slowing it down even more just makes it unbearable.

Lancer: Also pretty damn slow. Also blocks. Main tank class. About as entertaining as you'd expect a slow-ass tank to be in an action-RPG. Actually attacks faster than the Berserker, but does much less damage.

Mystics: Something with summons, I think? I don't remember all that well.

Priest: Remember very, very little.

Slayer: Got furthest as a human female Slayer. Basically, bash enemies with giant sword, roll to avoid getting hit back. Offensive class. Instead of starting with max MP and going down, they get their MP by whacking enemies first. More fun than most of the others classes in my opinion.

Sorcerer: Ranged normal attacks. Throws fireballs. Seems fun in theory. In practice, I just couldn't enjoy it. Attacks felt like they had no impact and didn't deal that much damage either.

Warrior: Dual-wields swords. Fast-attacking. Was the most fun to play and the most challenging (for what it's worth, anyway, as I didn't get far enough for the game not to be laughably easy).

Also, for reference, this is how bad the clothing is:

Trust me, the localization on Star Ocean: The Second Story was much, much worse. But yeah, SO3 had a pretty lame plot, but the combat was a hell of a lot of fun, and honestly, the story was dumb enough that you got a laugh as you went through it.

C+

Meh. The combat wasn't terrible in Episode 1, but it was pretty mediocre. It also gets painfully easy as you progress, ending up with the ability to just have Shion wipe the floor with everything the the very start of the battle. Combat gets worse in Episode 2, too: it's esoteric, messy, and just not every fun. It's also not as easy unless you level up a bit. Fortunately, I'm pretty sure you can do the same thing in Ep. 2 as you could in Ep 1, which is find some solo area with Shion and get 4x EXP for everything you kill. Episode 3 has super-generic combat, but it's at least pretty tolerable. Episode 3 is both great and bad: it actually increases the complexity of the storyline considerably, but it also basically requires that you read tons of info from the ingame codex. Also, censorship issues went from bad to absurd.

SH2 was great. Creepy as hell. I remember encountering one of the first monsters, and it was a big one dry-humping another one. Hilarious, yet also sufficiently WTF to take you out of zombie-killing mode. That was really what Silent Hill did so well: it managed to engage you sufficiently to the point that you stopped trying to game the system. As good as RE4 was, I quickly stopped thinking of enemies as terrifying threats and started knee-capping them and kicking their faces off. SH2 never makes you a fighter.

I concur.

Related, PSO2 will be F2P:

I'm not into video games as much as I used to be, which is just how it goes I guess. However occasionally I'll play this cute action/shooter-type game called "Pocky and Rocky" for the SNES. It's sort of a top down shooter, except the scene doesn't move you along, you move yourself along.

Also I've recently started up "Zelda: Link's Awakening" again, but it's a hefty game so I'm sure I won't get far.

Also when I have time I'll play "Persona 3: Portable" on my PSP and "Onimusha: Warlords" on my Ps2. I've gotten to the point where I don't start new games, just sort of replay ones that I've beaten in the past.

Progressive minded people should be interested in Journey for the PS3. Another arty type game a la Limbo, Ico etc, it's not much of a *game*, more like an interactive concept, but worth it for those who enjoy different/experimental types.

Back to The Walking Dead game, like all Telltale titles it's episodic, five parts this time. However, Telltale swear that dialogue and action choices you make throughout the series will revebrate right down to episode 5, resulting in very different scenarios. People have complained that the different choices don't seem to have much effect on the result of episode 1 itself, but that doesn't worry me, I trust Telltale that we'll start seeing the effects down the line. (One neat thing- the initial preview image for Episode 2 prominently shows a character who can die in Episode 1. If the character dies, they're gone from the preview.)

However we just went through similar promises with Mass Effect 3 so... but I don't think Telltale is going to screw the pooch quite so badly.

I know I'm banging on about Telltale here but they've got a great deal on right now, the Almost Everything deal.

For $45 you get signed up for the complete The Walking Dead

AND

All three must-play seasons of Sam And Max (genuinely worth $45 all by itself)
Hector (highly recommended)
Puzzle Agent 1 & 2 (also highly recommended)
Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People (also great)
Law & Order (pretty decent)
Jurassic Park (entertaining but shallow but it's fine lumped in with all this value)
Back To The Future 4 (I didn't like this at all, but some loved it)

That's weeks if not months of entertainment that would normally cost $115. Quality.

(No I don't work for Telltale.)

Diablo 3 anyone? Just got it this past weekend myself, up to level 21 with my Witch Doctor. Good fun.
With magic, you can turn a frog into a prince.
With science, you can turn a frog into a Ph.D. and you still have the frog you started with.

I played a bit of Diablo 3 on my mate's machine.  It's just like Diablo 2.  It'll get boring pretty fast too, I suspect.

I was like "erm, is there anything to do besides hack hack slash slash hack?"

That'll be a no then.  Much like Diablo 2 was.

I also found out what the plot premise was... hahahahaha.  Lame, Blizzard, lame.
