The final answer is: Godfather, because I want to watch it again. I just really like DeNiro's character, the young Vito. Smart, generous, understanding ... . The plot of Donnie Darko is easy to digest. To Kill ... is a bit ... no, it's quite ... turning-off on occasions, I must admit.

If that's the case then you should have voted for Godfather Part 2.

Nice list! Haven't seen 'em all but I threw in my vote for Videodrome. It's amazingly creepy and one of my favorite Cronenberg movies.

I see someone beat me to the punch asking how Clerks got on a list like this... Seeing Videodrome here throws me for a loop also. I like Videodrome quite a bit but it just doesn't seem to fit.

I gotta disagree about Clerks having witty dialogue. I think that's the worst part of the whole film. To me it's unrevelatory  about the characters uttering it which makes it fluff.  Theres nothing deep or poignant  mentioned in the first half of the film.  Mr. smith seems to think I want to hear all of his uninteresting personal thoughts on the mundane world voiced through shallow characters. I don't. To be fair maybe the film explodes in the second half which I could not continue to watch. Memorable characters... yeah I hafta agree with that. However I attribute that mainly to the actors and not their lines.

You would love Ingvar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, I think. Prog Trivia: Agalloch sample a quote from that film on The Mantle.

2001 is the greatest film ever made. Kubrick is the greatest director of all time, Kurosawa comes 2nd place. Happiness (1998) is the funniest comedy ever made. Awesome list of films.

Thanks.

I've seen plenty of Bergman's films (The Seventh Seal included), but Wild Strawberries still remains as my personal favorite. Still have to watch Persona though, of which I've read lots of good things.

As I've said before, to each his own.

What really bugs me, for the lack of a better word, is the easy criticism. I'm not saying that your critics weren't fundamented. Your arguments are totally valid, even if I don't agree with them.

What I'm saying is that right before I posted this poll, I knew someone would stand up and say something against Kevin Smith. I bet the same would have happened if I had included any movie by Tarantino or Spielberg. Some directors are easy to hate. The same way some bands are easy to hate. A Dream Theater poll appears and there's always someone saying "They suck. They are worthless".

I'm sure there must be people around here who think Bergman or Tarkovsky movies are slow or boring. Or don't like artists like Univers Zero, just to put an example. But you'll never see anyone saying "Univers Zero sucks so bad". Oh no, that's politically incorrect.

Why can't I enjoy a Kevin Smith movie as much as a Kurosawa one? Who's entitled to say which things are better than others?

^ How does one know whether or not we are entitled to something like that?

well we surely won't agree on everything on such a big list, for instance I think Being There is dull, Eye Wide Shut was Kubrick's worst, Psycho was not Hitchcock's best, and Chasing Amy is kinda silly; but they're all well-made films that deserve any praise they get.   As opposed to recent things like J. Edgar or Captain America or stuff.

You're right. I kinda mispoke when I said " list like this." It YOUR list so I have no business commenting on any single addition.   I'll only amend however by saying it's only my personal opinion of Clerks and not its inclusion on your list that I direct my comments to. I shoulda done more to make that clear, sorry. You can enjoy a Kevin Smith movie as much as any movie and I will not judge you or your list for it.

I try hard not to cheer lead by just throwing out statements like " they suck so bad" and walking away. That's pretty damn useless imo. The popular saying is 'opinions are like a****les......'  but I amend it to say 'Opinions without reasons are like a****les....'

And just for fun I'd like to mention that YOU entitled us to say which things are better than others by posting this poll :)

Definitely.

It's only a list. It's far from being an absolute truth. It's subjective and most of all, arguable, so I guess you could say I kinda mispoke there as well. And I don't have any problem if someone says "I don't like Clerks for "X" reasons" just as you did.

It's just that when I read "on a list like this", I thought to myself: why WOULDN'T Clerks belong here or be out of place?. After all, it is MY list.
