More of a personal request than something to aid the site at large, but I was wondering if anyone could give me constructive criticism on my reviews? I've realized recently that I am unsatisfied with the vast majority of what I write, even when I'm very familiar with the album I'm writing about. Assuming you have hopefully read some of my stuff over the year(s), if you have the time would you be able to 'review' my reviews in general, either here or as a PM?

Positives, negatives, things I should take out, things I should bring in, things I should focus on etc... Anything that might help me improve my writing is much welcomed!

Slainte,
Conor

Frankly, I find your reviews well done. I don't know that you have to do anything to them.

I can tell you what I do and if any of it makes sense for you steal it.

I change my focus based on how many reviews. If my review is the first one and unlikely to have alot of company, I'm more likely to give more summary information about the band or the project. If the album already has dozens of reviews, I tend to make the review much more personal to my experience of the album.

Overall, just make the reviews the kind of thing you'd want to know if you were considering buying the album.

You know this stuff already.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

On balance I find your reviews to be in the upper echelons here and always a pleasure to read, your writing has improved with age - as it should. For me they contain all I would want to see in a review - you don't just give an opinion that we should take or leave, but make some effort to explain why and I appreciate that even if perhaps I don't agree with the opinion or final conclusion.

Writing style is a personal thing, it is to some extent cosmetic because it doesn't affect the content or the message, but it can also affect readability and the way the message is conveyed and for that a little experimentation and variation maybe worth exploring, if only for variety and to keep your own interest going. You've written enough reviews not to fal linto the trap of confusing style with content.

After thirteen hundred reviews (plus howver many for MMA) it is understandable that you feel unstatisfied with what you think of the majority (isn't that true of any creative endeavour? - we all want to do better and all see our achievements as not as good as we'd like them to be), but there is a lot to be proud of so don't overlook those.

If I considered my reviews to be better than yours at all, then maybe I'd feel comfortable giving you advice. However, your reviews are some of the best on this site, and when I'm looking  through reviews for trusted names, yours is always at the top of my "trusted names" memory bank.

I'd rather you give me constructive criticism Big smile
